Of course, the big draw at Hasbro was the Transformers, specifically the line for the Transformers the movie. Unfortunately, nothing was spoiled for us, save for the appearance of the Devastator toy.
Devastator is huge, he’s got to be 18” tall and 24” wide. Six construction vehicles combine to form a massive robot. It’s been a long time since Hasbro has released a toy in this “elite” class. Devastator is expected to be released at a 99.99 price point, although that is TBD.
All six vehicles will be included in the Devastator set. However, the vehicles will not be able to transform into robot mode. That’s right, you will get vehicle mode and then it transforms into its component for Devastator. This is a disappointment.
Some of the vehicles will be released as deluxe or voyager class vehicles that WILL transform from vehicle to robot, but not combine to form Devastator. I’m sure some enterprising fan will customize them to do so.
In the Deluxe scale, we have a movie design that does not appear in the movie called Breakaway. He’s a fighter jet with some massive feet.
Deluxe Bumblebee is a re-issue with a different head, weapon, and paint deco.
Mudflap and Skids are brothers who apparently are involved in a pivotal battle in the film. Maybe with Devastator?
The only Deluxe Constructicon is Rampage – who has awesome tendrils made from his tank treads.
Sideswipe’s alternate mode is a concept Corvette.
There are 25 planned Deluxe Releases for 2009
In the Leader Scale, the only thing shown was an all-new Leader Class Optimus Prime. This toy is more accurate to the movie, features dual blades, and transforms into a seamless vehicle mode. There will be two leader class robots.
Legends class features an assortment of smaller vehicles based on the main characters of the movie including
Bumblebee
Jetfire
Optimus Prime
Springer
Voyager Class brings us a bevy of intricate Transformers with a new action feature. There will be 11 Voyagers released. The new feature is a sort of mech-alive feature where certain characters will have internal moving parts.
Shown at Toy Fair was Demolishor, Ironhide and an all-new Starscream.
Along with the core, lines were a bunch of new toys for 2009. Of most interest to collectors is the Human Alliance Bumblebee, a larger scale transforming vehicle (similar to alternators in complexity, only larger) that features a 2 ¼ inch Sam Witwicky that can ride inside the vehicle. In addition, the figure can stay inside the vehicle during transformation, or be mounted to one of several connection points around the robot. In vehicle mode, there is enough space for two figures, and future releases will feature different figures and vehicles.
Of course, not all the toys are for collectors.
Gravity Bots are pint-sized transformers that convert using the power of gravity. Better just watch the videos. They are actually pretty neat.
In place of the Cyber-Stompin robots, this time we have TRANSFORMERS MOVIE POWER BOTS. These are 10-inch robot-only versions of favorite TRANSFORMERS characters. These large-scale, chunky action figures include lights, sounds and battle features. Two new POWER BOTS figures featuring robots from TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN will be released in 2009.
There will also be Mega Movie Power Bots, larger robots that feature Transforming (IE lay down) action. Shown was Devastator, but Optimus Prime will also be released.
Role play is represented with the voice changing Bumblebee Helmet. The toy allows kids to mix their voice through a “radio” — just like BUMBLEBEE — and also features realistic robot battle sounds and radio tune-in phrases to add authenticity to the play experience.
A neat Bumblebee Blaster allows kids to strap on the blaster and defend the Earth against its evil invaders. Features electronic lights and sounds
One of the cooler kids sets is a new line of toys called Transformers RPM. RPM stands for Robot Powered Machines. These hot-wheels like cars look just like the movie in vehicle mode, but underneath is a representation of the character.
These cars can be used with the sold-separately set - Created specifically for the new TRANSFORMERS R.P.M.’s line of mini-vehicles, the TRANSFORMERS RPMs DEVASTATOR TRACK SET provides fast, mini-vehicle play within a dynamic track set by leveraging the iconic battle and high stakes drama found in the new movie. The track will bring DEVASTATOR to life and enable fans to re-enact the climactic movie battle between the AUTOBOTS and DEVASTATOR. The set features electric lights and sounds, and includes a vehicle.
