This is a podcast dedicated to the late Captain Lou Albano! May flights of sewage sing thee to thy rest!

This is about plumbers and chestnuts, wrestlers, burning Barbie doll faces off, and unchecked consumerism.

Click [HERE] to fondly remember Captain Lou Albano, wrestler, plumber, cartoon character... renaissance man.

More after the cut.

Mario, Luigi, and Rowdy Roddy Piper. And bagpipes cum vacuum cleaner!

Ride 'em cowboy.

No, not Toad in a costume. An Australian mushroom with a monacle.

Trees grow on the ceiling. Because it's DOWN UNDER. Get it? DOWN UNDER.

Although his actual wrestling days were before my time, he was my favorite manager when I was a kid. Here's to Captain Lou.... R.I.P..

He was a manager too? Who did he manage? Hmm, neat.

And hey, wait, if you're too young to remember the '80s... how old are you?

As far as I know, Capt. Albano managed a lot of wrestlers including The Valiant Brothers, The Blackjacks, & Jimmy 'The Superfly' Snuka who was one of my favorites as a kid cause I've almost bought an action figure of him so he can battle the Iron Shiek & Rod Piper in 1985.

He also psuedo-managed & collaborated w/ Cyndi Lauper in her music videos as they were instrumental in devising these Rockin' Wrestling publicity stunts which brought WWF to mainstream awareness in the 80s. I discovered WWF wrestling not only from Mr.T & Hulk Hogan when the appeared in NBC's Saturday Night's Main Event specials, I've also discovered the Rockin' Wrestling thing from the CBS cartoon TV Show called 'Hulk Hogan's Rockin' Wrestling' that appeared on that same year. It came on right after CBS Storybreak hosted by Captain Kangaroo.

Theses 2 were my exposure to Lou Albano other than this show.

Here's an idea: I think you guys & gals should cover a DAP-ST special on Hulk Hogan's Rockin' Wrestling show.

Anyway, my gracious thanks to you for paying homage to The Captain. He would've been proud of you folks.

Yeah, I totally grew up with him as a manager in the 80s, especially with Jimmy Snuka, who was also one of my favorites. I don't recall him wrestling much, if at all, in the 80s. I was referring to his earlier days in the late 60s and 70s with "The Sicilians". For the record, I'm 34.

Oh, Dave, I see what you mean. I certainly was not around for '60s and '70s stuff! I was just talking about the '80s! So... was he actually Italian?

So if you had a Captain Lou Albano figure AND a Rowdy Roddy Piper figure, you could have recreated Piper's appearance on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

We did mention the Cyndi Lauper thing and being on Hulk Hogan's Rockin' Wrestling TV show. Man, that show was horrrrrible, especially since another guy played Hulk Hogan on the cartoon that was clearly not Hulk. Let me see if I can find a VHS of it. I know my friend has it because I watched it with him like a year ago.

Thanks for the feedback!

Dear Jermey,

Sorry for the repetitive information concerning Rockin' Wrestling. It's just that your alter-ego 'Ginrai' brought up the manager question and that's when my nostalgic flashes took-over my logic.

I've only brought it up from my personal perspective because the podcast triggered a flashback with my childhood experience watching 80s WWF Wrestling. I was only reliving my moments in seeing the Main Event special on NBC that came on after SNL if I'm not mistaken.

It's pretty weird that I couldn't remember what episode of the Rockin' Wrestling cartoon was on that came after CBS Storybreak, but I remember the Storybreak episode which told the Chinese folktale version of Cinderella. That's all that I remember so far.

Come to think of it...I wonder what happened to the announcer Mr. Mean Gene Oakland? I'm not sure if he's still living these days.

Oh and BTW sir, you're very welcome for the feedback. Perhaps when you cover the silly but funny Rockin' Wrestling cartoon on DAP-ST, it'll probably help regain my memory on what episode that I saw at 1st time.

I have a few (late) comments about when Doki Doki Panic characters started appearing in Mario games. It was actually almost immediately after Super Mario 2 came out in America that this began to happen.

There weren't any Doki Doki characters in Super Mario 3 (unless you want to count Bob-omb*), but there were certainly a few of them that popped up in Super Mario World just one year later. Pokey, Pidget, and Ninji all appeared in this game. Super Mario World came out in Japan in 1990. Super Mario USA didn't come out in Japan until 1992. So, they were already merging the two worlds before they ever got our version of the game.

There's also a case to be made for Super Mario 2 influencing Super Mario 3. Graphically, they're very similar. SMB3 took a lot of graphical cues from it's American predecessor.

I don't know if I would say that the Super Mario Super Show had anything to do with this, but it certainly is an interesting series of events.

*Interesting thing about Bob-omb; I had heard that the bomb enemies in Super Mario 3 were not supposed to be the same enemies from Super Mario 2. That's why I don't necessarily count them as being Doki Doki characters in Super Mario 3.
