Destroy All Podcasts DX Episode 116 - Aim for the Ace! The Movie a.k.a. "Jump High" Hiromi

Hosts: Aaron, Jeremy, Star, Zuey
This is about girls playing tennis being manlier than war movies, mysterious, unrelenting coaches, and slamming your breasts into the concrete.
Click [HERE] take a tennis ball to the stomach.
Sorry the sound quality was a little crap on this one. More after the cut.
This movie has some crazy stylization.

And sweaty, scary, manly girls.

It also has lesbian tension!

The director came up with some really interesting visuals.

There's lots of split screen.

This shot has both Osamu Dezaki's "postcard memories" and split screen tics in the same image!

This movie also features a lot of breast surfing in the name of tennis.

No, I really mean it. It happens a lot.

I bet you didn't know tennis was so hardcore!

Here's a well worn example of the Japanese VHS release.

Here's the Aim for the Ace! soundtrack.

This is the Aim for the Ace! manga.

In France, Aim for the Ace! was known as Game, Set, & Match.

In Italy, the series is known as Jenny The Tennis Player.

Even the manga got foreign releases!

Here's the cover for the rather bad Super Famicom game. For the truly curious, an English fan translation is available on the internet as this game was never localized for release in English on the Super Nintendo.

Here's some video footage of the game in action.
Here's the trailer for the movie.
And finally, this is the opening for the movie.

Dear Jermey,
you know I was about to ask you if this movie inspired Mr. Anno's Gunbuster OVA, and you've brought that up on track 00:50:34 saying that listeners like me would've brought it on this blog. You knew this moment was obviously preordained. To be honest; the title didn't catch my thought on Gunbuster until I've listened to you & your crew talked about the movie with flaring passion. I admire your sense of premonition; it's very commendable. I wonder if this movie did partly inspire Gunbuster. If not, then the themes, characters, & plot similarities are probably coincidental.
I want to see this movie now. It's been a while since I've seen new wave Asian movies like this.
This podcast is enjoyable to hear with great spirit. It's as enjoyable and rewarding as Sky Crawlers and I thank you from the conscience of my earthly soul.
