I'm pretty sure D'Arcy was the only woman on this particular podcast.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the usage of Fat people in all of Satochi Kon Films:
Perfect Blue: Rumi, the manager is fat and jealous of Mima and her idol career.
Tokyo Godfather: When Miyuki stabs her father she is fat although she is seen thin through the film. Gin is fat through the film but when his life was together in a flashback, he his thin.
You already mentioned the use of fat in Paprika. Millennium Actress is the only one that doesn't have that "fat" characters as seen in the other films.
I saw the films in order so seeing a fat character in Paprika was expected as he has used it as a plot device in all his films. Sure enough Toru was fat. I'm sure there is a fat character in Paranoia Agent.
His fat characters seemed to me obsessed with desires that they cannot obtain.

Hmm, you know, that's a good point. I didn't really make the connection to Rumi in Perfect Blue or anything. A good topic to bring up as we do podcasts on other Kon works. I wonder if overweight people mattered in some way in his personal life.
I believe Kon used fat people differently than most every other anime directors. Like you guys mentioned in the podcast anime tends to use the fat anime stereotype as either a thug brute or comic relief. We've seen it a hundred times but they are usual killed off or still a likable member of the main cast.
Kon tends to use fat people with deep emotional problems which is very different from how they have been in anime before. There is a much deeper and psychological reasons why they are fat in Kon films than the typical anime.
In fact Toru was maybe the first time one actually had empathy for his fat characters when in previous films he always used them as the antagonist. I was a bit surprised Toru ended up being a "good" character in the film but his emotional distress caused a lot of the problems in the film similar to Rumi in Perfect Blue.
I'm not sure why he would use fat characters like he did, visually it stands out more than your typical anime character in terms of art design and but it's always a tell who is going to be emotional baggage in his films and a unique trait to his storytelling and filmmaker style.
BTW I was saddened to learned that he died in 2010, which I didn't know until this broadcast, I think he was an excellent director and it is kind of sad there will be no more films from him.
