I think its important to note that Shin Mazinger was very heavily focused on the story and not so much on the action. It was centered on the backstory of Koji's family and how the evil empire came to be. I can only assume that this was why the fans demanded a Mazinger series that was shorter and more action based.

Also, I believe the story didn't make much sense to people like us is because the anime series is actually a continuation of the Mazinkaiser SKL manga that was released in Japan. I've managed to find a few scanned pages online but haven't been able to make much sense of it :(. Still, the intro does give some idea of how they managed to find Mazinkaiser SKL buried under the original photon power lab, plus some fans speculated that one of the pilots might have been Koji's son.

This is the first episode listened to. I had watched this show and wanted to hear what was discussed. I watched SKL without an overdub. It was all subbed. I enjoyed the hell out of the robo violence porn!
