Damn! Do they grease it up before they stick it in you! I really don't see alot of people shelling out that kinda loot without a gun being held to their head.

Man it should be made out of Gold for that much...and I hope those pics are just bare boned prototypes...looked like a cheap plastic toy to me.

I think I'll just fork over my cash on the Macross Quarter & Fortress Maximus.

They'll look perfect with my Metroplex toy.

I can live without....that....thing.

The PU thing sounds like marketing to me. Resins by default are a polyurethane compound. PU is, in fact, just another word for "polyurethane" and is the same stuff used in everything from microwaves to shoes. They may be trying to say that they're using a high quality polyurethane, but it's still not some sort of magical super new material.

So they're going to sell.... one?

It's been a crime that such an iconic ship has been tough to find in glorious toy form for so long. While detailed, I don't count this as a solution either due to the price.

C'mon. How tough is it to build a ship that transforms by....lying down???

Only now do I realize what a sin I've committed when I sold my MINT in MINT box IMAI SDF-1 MACROSS in 1/5000 scale. It was a very accurate plastic model of the original TV series version.

Wait a sec, didn't the news reported the original price for this thing was set to cost $500? Did I imagine that or was it just a toy publicity hoax?

For $2500 you could get a lot more swag vs. one item that will in essence be a center piece.
Also you may have to declare it on taxes or get it through customs in one piece.
For that amount I'd rather have a studio halfeye perfect change Gao Gai Gar or Getter Robo.

For a toy... geez...

Wow, and it's not even the version most people want, way to make a white elephant Yamato.

Go find a TT version, or even the decent Matchbox release of it, for a nice specimen it would be about 1/10 the price at most.

This fits in with the Bandai 1/12 Gundam stuff and the Toynami huge veritechs. They're strictly for stores to feature in their showroom and the people with FU money.

Maybe a GNU version at 1/2 the size and 1/10 the price will appear.

Feels like they are asking me for a first born child.....

Any concrete info on this? Someone on TBDX also called this thing a "prototype"...which seems to corroborate what ccsofubia is saying.

I wouldn't mind paying $500+ for something this big and beautiful I have to assemble/paint it (well...as long as it's the tv version! ;) ).

Here's an update from Graham at Macross World:

"OK, had a long talk on the phone with Yamato last night and here's what I was told.
The $2,000 SDF-1 is an exact replica of Yamato’s prototype and is being marketed as such. It is neither a toy, or a model kit per say.
Each one is being individually built by the prototype maker, not mass produced in a Chinese toy factory. This is why the high cost. I was told that it can often cost a million yen getting prototypes made. Yamato will only be having a small run of these made and had to negotiate quite hard with the maker to get the price they did.
It will be sold unpainted.
It will be sold partially assembled. The major sub-assemblies, such as the ARMDs, body, legs, etc will be pre-assembled and then the customer just has to bolt everything together.
The joints will be ratchet joints and will be made of hard nylon for durability.
The main material IIRC is High Density Polyethylene (HDP), which has excellent tensile strength and impact resistance. I was told it is 6 times stronger than the type of resin used for garage kits. As mentioned, HDP is widely used on cars.
Why are Yamato even selling this? – Well, when they originally had the prototype made, Yamato thought that it would be possible to produce it in ABS at a lower cost. Unfortunately, with the tooling limitations of the toy factories they use, it was not possible to mass produce it. So rather than scrap the whole project and write it off as a loss, they decided to still offer it to those hard-core fans who just had to have a large scale SDF-1.
For those wanting a smaller, more affordable SDF-1, I’ll just say that patience is a virtue and the virtuous are often rewarded."
