Yamato to release a blank VF-1S

Yamato has just gotten a little more customizer friendly with the announcement of an unpainted VF-1S toy. The price is 7800 yen, that's 2000 yen less than the regular price.

Check it out at Yamato's website.

Interesting. Shame the UNSpacy delta-kite is still on there. ;)

So... can I cover it?

That's just in the preview image. The text mentions it will include decals for those markings.

If I decide to get one, it's not gonna be a Valkyrie.

It's gonna be G1 Jetfire.

Just ask reprolabels to provide some stickers for it. Removing the canopy shield is easy enough so you can even get that authentic Jetfire look.

I'm so pumped! I'd want at least 2! One for Jetfire and one for my own personal Valkryie!

I get the point, but..."Our next big repaint is no paint at all!"...uh...

It's different, I'll admit. I've never heard of a non-repaint repaint before either...

One thing I was completely didn't know about until I started covering Macross Con was what a huge underground scene of Valkyrie customizers. I come from the world of making model kits and painting them how I like. But many people don't have those skills or have basic modeling skills that many people were buying the Valkyries and stripping them and repainting the toys to their own customs paint jobs. If you have build any of the Valkyrie model kits you understand they are some of the most challenging model kits ever made.

Accordingly, a lot of Macross hobbyist have created a very healthy scene of custom Valkyries. This is less a "recolor" and more of a "canvas" for the customizers Macross hobbyist. Good job for Yamato recognizing this sub-culture and releasing a product directed towards them.

I totally agree, Leo. I think this is brilliant. I just wish it came with one of *each* head. Plus, it might be cool if they released a blank two-seater as well. How about a separate weapons set: add'l gunpods, wing-mounted gunpods, missiles, and other countermeasures.

And just to state my stance on the idea of recolors, I'm all for them. No one is forced to buy each and every repaint of a toy. Plus, it gives some crazy fanboys the chance to buy their favorite obscure wacky variant (like me: I wasn't going to get any of these until the VE-1 was announced!).

Selling repaints gives them more money from essentially the same designs/molds. More money for the company means they stay in business longer to offer us more stuff in the future...

And it's not like they're not developing more toys as we speak. I've heard the argument that repaints somehow "distract" toy companies from developing all-new sculpts...as though all their resources are being "wasted" on repaints instead of new toys. That's absurd. If they have *any* business sense at all, the "next best thing" is on the drafting table right now...
