How should we run this year's Toy of the Year poll?

By price point (the way we did it last year)
25% (58 votes)
By type of toy (action figure, chogokin)
41% (97 votes)
By toy line (Best Revoltech....)
29% (69 votes)
Other method (leave your ideas in the comments)
5% (11 votes)
Total votes: 235

I like the idea of just giving the best toy the award, regardless of cost, type etc...

By Type seems to make most sense to me. Pricepoint is way too random in this hobby. You can get a Megablocks set that's thoroughly enjoyable for 1/10 the price of the latest CM's gokin.

And Toy Line doesn't make sense for toys that don't belong to an established line, or if one toy is absolutely amazing while all others in the line suck.

I think Dan might be on to something: have a hybridized poll. Multiple categories: best toy line, best toy by price, best toy in each category...then finally, best overall toy, period (regardless of all other factors).

How could you do it by toy line? There would have to be way too many awards. I think it should be by price point again, but then do a "best toy overall" award, since as Sanjeev said,a smaller cheaper toy can be more enjoyable than a big one.
I for one like Revoltechs more than most big expensive "collectable" figures, since they're less of a floppy pain in the ass to pose and stand on a shelf, plus they just look cooler. (just my opinion)

I like the Price Point angle if you can only choose
one factor. It's hard to imagine a $10 or less action
figure outdoing one priced around $30-$50. Maybe there's
an exception out there, but I don't think the existence
of the exception would be enough to allow the more
expensive toys to pound away at the rest of the cheaper
ones.

If anything was allowed, then I would prefer Price Point
as subcategories in the general categories based on
Type of Toys.

By type for sure. Sanjeev made some pretty good points, though I'm not sure about the hybridized poll thing. Might get a bit complicated. Dunno...

Personally, I think it should be based on price point first, follwed by a final showdown between each winner of their respective catergories...Put simply; you can't compare a 20.00 Revoltec with a 150.00 high end product IMHO.

TYpe works out to more of the multi-platform audience in my opinion. Judging by Price Point really sets a depressing "Elitist" attitude of what's good because only so many people choose to buy it or Can buy it. Like "why did you buy that for XXXXX amount when for X amount you can get XXXX number of other things."

More over not everybody buys the same things. So a by type awards everyone's favorites> Line, Price, Category, Brand, Models, ETC.

I KINDA SUPPORT DAN'S SUGGESTION TO JUST PUT OUT "THE BEST TOY AWARD" OR "2008 TOY OF THE YEAR AWARD".

HOWEVER MAY I SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

DESIGN - PLAYABILITY WISE, IS IT GOOD?
QUALITY - ARE THE QUALITY OF MATERIALS PUT INTO THE TOY GOOD? IS IT DURABLE?
ASSEMBLY - IS THE ASSEMBLY GOOD? ARE THE PARTS HOLD EACH OTHER TOGETHER FAIRLY?
PRICE - IS THE PRICE REASONABLE/WORTH IT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION THE 3 ABOVEMENTIONED?

ANOTHER SUGGESTION: TYPE OF TOY IS ALSO OKAY. "CHOGOKIN TOY OF THE YEAR" "ACTION FIGURE OF THE YEAR" "PLUSH TOY OF THE YEAR"...THEN WE'D HAVE "OVERALL TOY OF THE YEAR" KEWL!!

ABOVEMENTIONED CRITERIA MAY AGAIN BE USED IN EACH CATEGORY...

I AM NOT SURE IF YOU AGREE WITH ME ON THIS GUYS, BUT I THINK THAT WHATEVER AWARD THAT WILL BE DECIDED UPON, THERE OUGHT TO BE A WELL DEFINED CRITERIA FOR JUDGING ON THE TOTALITY OF EACH NOMINATED TOY.

JUST THINKING OUT LOUD... PEACE Y'ALL!

Has to be price. "Action figures" ranges from a five dollar Star Wars figure, to a $40 Transformer, to a $60+ fancy pants Japanese robot item.

Maybe by best genre? Best kaiju, best transforming robot, best non-transforming robot, best monster, best character toy, best original toy, best fixed pose collectible, etc..

Whatever best compares apples to apples, so to speak..

I think that however you organize the categories, the voting should not be open to all. I would be more interested in awards that the reflect the opinions of the CollectionDX editors, rather than the opinions of the unwashed masses.
