In 2005, Toei released their annual Super Sentai show that depicted Magic as the main theme. Alongside Kamen Rider Hibiki, this show ran in the Super Hero Time slot of TV Asahi. I’ll cut the introductions and go straight to my review, the Sentai Hero Series Legend Magiranger. This is part 1 and focuses on Legend Magi Red.

From what I know of this toy, this is part of a long running series in Bandai’s Soft Vinyl collection. Titled the Sentai Hero Series, this is part of the 3 set series with the others being Rider Hero Series and Ultra Hero Series. This figure is no exception from the earlier and the rest as there are limited movements available. Movements are only in 2 major areas, the waist and the 2 shoulders. The Magiranger Series each came with their signature weapons. For the Legend Magiranger Set, we have the standard weapon for all 5 of them, the Dial Rod. As you can see, the details of this guy is superb and cleaner compared to older versions (back in the 90s) with some smeared paint can be seen on various parts of the body. I personally like the Phoenix wings on Ozu Kai’s face in Legend mode. Do notice that the Dial Rod is detailed significantly well too and has the lion’s face made clear.

Well this is how it looks like at the back. All the details are done nicely and are clean. Originally, I don’t like Soft Vinyls due to their limited poses but when I came to my senses, only these guys are available for most of the Sentai and Rider heroes. In attaining more support for this line, Bandai Hong Kong has repackaged Sentai Hero Series figures beginning from Magiranger and re-releasing them to the South East Asian markets similar to the Rider Hero Series repacks. The only differences are they used Power Rangers instead of the original name.

This is how the box of the repackaged one looks like. Very generic but the text are what differentiates the Legend ones and the normal ones. This box is for my Legend Magi Red (or whichever one since I have 4 out of 5 Legends in these boxes, I got them confused) and the texts wrote Legend Power Ranger. The normal ones would write there Mystic Force Power Ranger (I know that because I have a Magi Red from this packaging too).

This is how the box looks like behind. It clearly shows you how many available characters are there for collection in the Legend line but no clear cut identifications of which one is in this box, making me search high and low for them to make a complete set. However not, the figures’ foot soles still have the embedded TV Asahi and Bandai China 2005 writings. TV Asahi is written in Kanji and Katakana and this would show that it is a genuine Magiranger line product. At first, I was wondering why Bandai US did this, but later I found out that it wasn’t Bandai US’ doings, but Bandai Hong Kong’s doing and I am very happy for this. A very interesting alteration on the Legend Magi compared to the normal Magi was the head can turn in the normal Magi but this function was completely revoked in the Legend lines. I am not sure what happened to their molds but I don’t often see SHS (Sentai Hero Series) with turning heads. The normal Magi Red will be reviewed on a later date. I’ll cover my other Legend Magi Ranger figures as well later as I have 1 with the original Japanese Packaging. For spoilers, Bandai Hong Kong also altered the design of the included Character Card and omitted the numberings in it.

The pictures show how different the pieces are for the cardings. Bandai 2007 is seen in the Hong Kong repackaged edition (the date Magiranger aired in Hong Kong and the date Mystic Force came to Malaysia). So, this basically settles the first part of this review. This is longer for one figure because I had to explain every detail regarding the different packaging but will do more figures in one later.

:

In the direct-to-video “MagiRanger- The Movie: The Bride of Infershia”, Kai Oz’s soccer team manager and [not-so-secret] crush, Yamazaki Yuki, is kidnapped by King Glum. This Infershia general plans to marry her in order to release and awaken Emperor N. Ma. Though Yamazaki resists, the Sky Saint traitor Memmei casts a spell over her using a diamond ring. To get her back, the five Oz siblings climb a huge Mandoru-boy to reach the sky-bound lands of Magitopia, and its leader the great Sky Saint Magiel [played by the late legendary Super Sentai actress Machiko Soga in her last on-screen role]. When Magiel is convinced of their intentions, she gives to Kai a Majuu Unigolon to help him travel into the Hades underground. As a point of interest to the Oz siblings, their father, the fallen champion Sky Saint Blagel, had used this Unigolon as his steed in battle. The two arrive just in time to prevent the Infershia wedding between King Glum and the Bride of Infershia, and MagiRed rescues Yamazaki. After returning her safely to the surface, King Glum engages the five MagiRanger and is defeated. But the madoushi Memmei uses his dark magic to grow Glum and rebuild him into the giant Sword of Glum- a monster with metal blades and spikes, shaped like a scorpion. To combat the Sword of Glum, MagiRed changes into Saint MagiPhoenix and then merges with the Unigolon to form Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser. Together with MaRyuu Gattai MagiDragon and Mahou Tetsujin Travelion, the Sword of Glum is destroyed with a series of magical attacks.

...

In Stage 34- “Bond of Courage” in the series, Wolzard is unexpectedly & shockingly revealed to be the lost Magitopia champion Blagel. Not only that, but this also makes him father of the five Oz siblings, whom they thought had died in the war fifteen years earlier! He changes into his human form, Izamu, and teleports them all to the surface of Infershia. There, he explains that he had been trying to seal the Infershia from the inside, but because of damage done in the final battle by the traitorous Sky Saint Raigel, it left open the opportunity for Emperor N.Ma to transform him into the loyal Madou Knight Wolzard, and blocked out his real memories. But before the five siblings have a chance to absorb all of this, Memmei and Vancuria take Blagel back into Infershia, and unleash the meshed Chimera creature once more on the MagiRanger. Just in the nick of time, MagiShine and Lunagel arrive riding a Majuu Unigolon- a legendary horned horse that can freely travel between Marudeonna universes, Magitopia, and the real world. The Unigolon takes the MagiRanger back to the real world; the two Sky Saints, however, chose to remain behind to settle the score against the traitor Memmei. Chimera follows the MagiRanger and grows to gigantic proportions. While the others are still weakened with grief and shock, MagiRed impatiently and aggressively transforms himself and Unigolon into their giant forms and then into Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser. MagiDragon soon follows and is overpowered by Chimera, but Saint Kaiser, in a rage, is able to defeat the monster. Sadly, no sooner does he do that when Mahou Gattai WolKaiser appears, and the two engage in a heated battle... avenging youngest son against cursed trapped father.

Since Saint Kaiser appeared in the OVA movie as well, which had no real continuity with the series, there is no way to tell which version is the ‘correct’ version. However, for the sake of less confusion, I will use the series as basis for this review, since it was more important to the plot that way than it was in the movie.

To the uninitiated or untrained eye, Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser is virtually identical to its dark counterpart, Majin Gattai WolKaiser. There are several differences, other than just its coloring:

The silver on its legs, metallic blue for its belt, and the artistic ‘M’s on both its chest and head have been repainted gold. There is also a small diamond on his forehead that was originally painted gold that has been left the original red color of the hard PVC plastic. Aside from these few paint alterations, MagiPhoenix and Saint MagiPhoenix are exactly the same. The most obvious one is that Unigolon’s head has been redesigned to incorporate a long unicorn’s horn with an ‘M’ molded on either side, and a screw-like pattern running across it’s length. Its mane has also been changed, with the screw pattern running its length as well. The tail has been re-sculpted to make it curve in a different angle. While the color of the plastic has been changed from black to white, some very minor paint apps were changed as well, such as removing silver paint from all four lower legs and leaving them the natural white of the plastic. Unigolon forms the head, torso, part of the chest, arms, legs, and weapon of Saint Kaiser.

As MagiPhoenix did with Barikion, Saint MagiPhoenix can ride atop Unigolon in an unnamed configuration; there are no reins for the toy to grasp like there are in the both the movie and series. Because MagiPhoenix wielded the Phoenix Sword, Unigolon’s horn was designed to detach so that Saint MagiPhoenix would be provided with a sword as well. However, the unnamed sword was not used or mentioned in the show or movie.

“When light and flame become one, the holy Majin will [now] appear!”

Saint Kaiser, in channeling Kai Oz’s rage and raw determination, proves to be a powerful opponent against the multi-faceted and multi-faced Chimera. While he may not have had absolute control over the Unigolon’s power, it was enough to destroy the monster. Then when WolKaiser appeared, Saint Kaiser dueled against him to an unprecedented but much-anticipated stalemate. Like WolKaiser, he wields a double-blade staff composed of Unigolon’s mane, neck and head & horn. With it, Saint Kaiser can perform the Saint Horn Finish- where he jumps high into the air, and impales the unicorn horn into his enemy.

However, Saint Kaiser’s long ponytail-like queue is shaped differently, adding the smaller unicorn horn which unfolds from his forehead, and a new face design.
Because Saint Kaiser and FireKaiser are nearly identical, what one can do, the other can do as well; and that is the chest swapping and riding features common to almost all of the DX “MagiRanger” line. Though never seen on the show, this means that:

Saint MagiPhoenix can:

ride on top of MagiDragon

ride on top of Barikion

ride on top of MagiLion

be combined with MagiFairy to form an alternate chest for the MagiKing (though it would look no different when combined)

be combined with MagiFairy to form an alternate chest for the Travelion

be combined with Barikion to form an alternate chest for the FireKaiser (though it would look no different when combined)

be combined with Barikion to form an alternate version of the WolKentauros

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate version of the WolKentauros

MagiPhoenix can:

ride on top of Unigolon

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate version of the WolKentauros

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate chest for the Saint Kaiser(though it would look no different when combined)

the Head Train from Travelion can:

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate chest and head for the Saint Kaiser

Wolzard can:

ride on top of Unigolon

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate version of the WolKentauros

be combined with Unigolon to form an alternate chest, head, and weapon for the Saint Kaiser

It is this last point that needs clarification- Wolzard merging with Unigolon. Because Wolzard also shares a similar shape with Saint MagiPhoenix, and Unigolon is nearly identical to Barikion, an alternate white & gold version of WolKaiser can be formed. Bandai did not intend for there to be a rotating face under Unigolon’s jaw like there is on Barikion. So instead, they designed a single, non-moving piece to represent a ‘face’. This is because MagiPhoenix and Wolzard have different neck structures for FireKaiser and WolKaiser, respectively. And so here, since Wolzard requires the horse head for his combination, Bandai placed an alternate ‘face’ under Unigolon’s jaw so that he wouldn’t need Barikion’s. Also, since Unigolon’s head is needed for the alternate WolKaiser, his tail becomes useless, so it is incorporated into the staff, giving it a wicked golden sheppard’s hook on one end, and Unigolon’s mane on the other. This makes it look near-identical to the Bari-Javelin used by WolKaiser.

For those of you wondering what the differences are between the DX Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser from “Mahou Sentai MagiRanger”/"MagiRanger- The Movie: The Bride of Infershia", and its English-speaking counterpart, the Deluxe Steedergon Fury Megazord from “Power Rangers Mystic Force”, I have stunning news...

There are no differences-! They are perfectly identical in every way except in packaging and instructions! Actually, the Steedergon Fury Megazord is about $30.00 less since it’s not imported directly from Japan. All paint apps, materials, and moldings are exactly the same, and there are no decals for either toy. For 2006, you need not have to worry about importing the rare DX Saint Kaiser unless you are concerned about its connection to the “MagiRanger” line and the packaging. (And, if you already paid for an expensive import like I did, I completely sympathize...) Additionally, Bandai America never released the DX WolKaiser in American toy stores due to marketing strategies. They said that the black robot would not sell very well, though they thought that they may have released it later in 2006 as a store-exclusive; alas that never came to pass.

To be honest, Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser actually looks a little meaner to me than WolKaiser; this white devil with a golden spear, flaming soul and racing heart. I didn’t get it just because it was just a movie-exclusive release or repaint. It has a different aura to it, and has its own look aside from WolKaiser. I completely recommend getting it... (Although, between just you and me, I’d go with the Deluxe Steedergon Fury Megazord because it’s exactly the same toy, but cheaper, and you don’t have to pay for those expensive S&H costs.)

The morpher is an actual working hole puncher. There is a slot at the top where tickets, or other paper can be placed and a handle/lever to punch the hole. There is a small clear plastic compartment to collect the paper punch discs that can be emptied when full. It actually does a very good job of punching holes and is better that some hole punchers I use at work!:

The MagiRanger Sky Cellular Phone Grip Phone (天空ケータイグリップフォン) is supposed to be a combination Ticket Puncher and Cell Phone Morpher and is used by Magi Shine in the Japanese Mahou Sentai MagiRanger TV series.

The morpher is 6-3/16" in length; 2-5/8" in width; 1-1/8" deep. It uses 2-AAA batteries and the battery cover is screwless. To open the cover, you use a small object, like the end of a paperclip, to push down a small spring loaded piece of plastic and you slide the cover open. The morpher is mostly blue in color with gold trim (like Magi Shine's costume.)

The antenna housing is made of clear plastic and inside is a red colored LED that is the light source for the morpher.

The morpher is an actual working hole puncher. There is a slot at the top where tickets, or other paper can be placed and a handle/lever to punch the hole. There is a small clear plastic compartment to collect the paper punch discs that can be emptied when full. It actually does a very good job of punching holes and is better that some hole punchers I use at work!

Squeezing the handle produces a sound that is a combination of both a ticket being punched and a ricocheting bullet. Turning the Power Switch ON produces a 3-note sound and the red LED in the clear plastic antenna flashes once. The bottom of the morpher has a keypad for the cell phone with numbers 0-9 and two telephone icons. There is also an "M" key (for Magi Ranger). All of the keys are soft-touch and activate various sounds.

Numbers 0-9- pressing any of these keys will generate one of 3 random tones and the red LED flashes once.

Telephone Off-the-Hook Icon - pressing this once will cause the phone to ring 12 times and the red LED flashes 3 times. This repeats for 3 cycles.

Telephone Icon - pressing this will cause the phone to beep twice and the red LED flashes once.

"M" key - pressing this causes a swirling, swishing sound sort of like a train chugging along that gets faster and faster, followed by an explosion. The whole things lasts for 10 seconds, during which the red LED flashes faster and faster in-synch with the speeding train sound.

When any of the numbers 0-9 are pressed and you squeeze the Ticket Puncher Handle, it will generate the following special sounds:

0 - a gun being fired.

1 - a blast.

2 - a railroad crossing-gate signal clangs 3 times.

3 - an old-style telephone rings.

4 - the sound of soda being slurped through a straw when you reach the bottom of the glass.

5 - a doorbell ringing. (ding-dong)

6 - Squeezing the bulb on a bicycle horn.

7 - a cat meowing.

8 - a cuckoo clock.

9 - laughter

"M" key - an explosive morphing sound followed by a train whistle. Lasts 4 seconds.

Squeezing the handle again will repeat the last sound produced. You can repeat the sound an infinite number of times by repeatedly squeezing the handle.

The Grip Phone comes with 15 ticket cards (5 each of 3 different cards.)that look like the kind of cards Magi Shine uses in the TV show. You also get 12 blank cards that are completely white and have nothing on them at all.

In Japan, teens do not carry their cell phones loose. They buy wrist-cord attachments that are available in a wide variety of colors, designs and character logos and their cell phones hang on their wrists from these cords. The Grip Phone has an attachment on it that allows for one of these wrist-cords to be attached. The wrist-cord is not supplied, but if you'd like to attach one, there's a place on the phone to attach it to.

In my opinion, the Japanese version is much better than the US version, literally because of the variety of"bells and whistles" and flashing lights. The US version produces only 3 sounds, whereas the Japanese version produces more than a dozen.

Toei Entertainment, Ltd.- producer the Japanese Super Sentai genre since its inception in 1975- borrowed dozens of elements and ideas from fantasy and magic stories from many cultures, countries, books, stories & movies to create “Mahou Sentai MagiRanger”. So, the creation of the Travelion Express is most likely a nod to the crimson red Hogwarts Express, a steam train from the modern popular “Harry Potter” series of novels & movies spurned by British author J.K. Rowling.

Assembled in its train configuration, the Travelion Express stretches out to 35 ½”- not quite as long as the only other previous train-combo mecha, the five-part DX Grand Liner from “Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGo-V” (1999), which was 50 ” long, but 18” tall in its combined robot form. Each of the joints between the cars can free-rotating about 30º altogether for each.

The DX Travelion also has two AAA-sized batteries inside the engine section, which provides it with a simple light-&-sound feature. Pressing a button on the right side of the dark blue boiler will produce either a whistle blowing sound twice, or the sound of a train running across tracks for about eight seconds. Both sounds are accompanied by the red LED lighting up inside the front of the gold seal on the front of the engine. When the feature is first turned on via a black switch on the right side under the cab, the whistle blows and the light flashes again. Either way, the speaker is loud and clear!

MagiShine summons the Travelion Express and then jumps into the cockpit, with his trusted pet cat-genie Smoky behind him. Then he uses his Grip Phone to cut a small hole in a Join Punch Card, calling out: “Mahou Transformation!”

Goo Goo Goldiro!
(wand- wand- body)

In addition to being able to travel long distances magically, the six-part train can combine into the bulky Travelion. With Smoky the Magical Cat shoveling Magic Coal into the Travelion’s furnaces from the cockpit, MagiShine can direct it to perform any number of magical attacks, or perform a series of rapid punches & kicks.

Transformation is fairly straight forward, requiring two changes per piece, minimum. The tender actually gets the most attention as it splits itself in half and flips around. Like the DX Tokusou Gattai DekaRanger Robo from 2004’s “Tokusou Sentai DekaRanger” (aka Deluxe Delta Squad Megazord, from “Power Rangers S.P.D.”, 2005), the DX Travelion also features a rare hidden electronic switch that activates when the golden scoop on the front is lowered or raised. It produces the sound of metal clinking together and steam hissing, and the LED flashes again. Now, unlike the DX DekaRanger Robo, or even the DX Galaxy Mega from 1997’s “Denji Sentai MegaRanger” (aka Deluxe Astro Megazord, from “Power Rangers in Space”, 1998), the hidden switch for the changing sounds in the Travelion is in a hard-to-reach place, so it can’t be easily triggered on purpose simply by sticking something into it. I should also note that when the Travelion is in its robot form, the On/Off switch cannot be reached, so it has to be turned on before it’s combined if you wanted to use the light-&-sound feature.

The large cylinder with the gold seal on the front of it projecting from its chest- the steam engine- looks like a giant bazooka; the Travelion can perform the Steam Bazooka attack from the top of its head. It can also perform the Remote Liner attack- where the two smaller steam trains hidden in the leg compartments shoot out and wrap an opponent in track-like binds. For finishers, the Travelion can perform the Destruction Fire attack- where it lowers the gold seal on the front of the engine and sucks in its opponents to be incinerated in its furnace. Or-

For those of you wondering what the differences are between the DX Mahou Tetsujin Travelion from “Mahou Sentai MagiRanger”, and its English-speaking counterpart, the Deluxe Solar Streak Megazord from “Power Rangers Mystic Force”, it’s too early to say as of the posting of this review. Even though “PRMF” started airing in early February 2006, the Deluxe Solar Streak Megazord will not be released until late-Summer or early-Fall 2006. There are no rumors either to confirm what possible [dare I say inevitable?] changes it will undergo.

Sets required for these combinations:

DX Majin Gattai MagiKing (sold separately)

DX Majin Gattai WolKaiser (sold separately)

DX Mahou Tetsujin Travelion

DX Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser (sold separately)

In addition to changing by itself, the DX Travelion can also swap out the chest component with both the DX MagiKing and DX WolKaiser sets, though this never happened in the show so they have no ‘official’ names. The MagiPhoenix and MagiFairy figures from the MagiKing can be inserted into the Travelion’s torso compartment, as can Wolzard and his Jagan Shield. But the opposite is also true- the steam train can be attached onto the torsos of either the MagiKing or WolKaiser to form giant cannons. Heck, because they have the exact same components from the WolKaiser, you could even swap out the Saint MagiPhoenix from the DX Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser and place the steam engine onto its chest as well!

If the “MagiRanger” line of DX toys had ended with just the DX Majin Gattai MagiKing and DX Majin Gattai WolKaiser, I would have been very satisfied. However, for some strange reason, Bandai felt that a giant dark blue, gold, and red steam train would fit in with the fantasy & mythological creature themes. I like the Travelion ‘n all, but not as it relates to the “MagiRanger” series; it just doesn’t work and, really, degrades the line. Also, there were several places where different things could have been done to enhance play value:

The two arm compartments, which have no function, could have been replaced with retractable elbow joints. They’ve done it before with the Gao Shark, Gao Polar & Gao Bear, Gao Hammerhead, Saw Shark, and Hurricane Dolphin, so I don’t know why they didn’t here.

Rotating wrist joints

Room could have been made in the leg pieces to allow for-

working hip and knee joints, which would extend the badly-needed length of the legs

spring loaded launchers for the Remote Liner accessories

Rolling pin-style wheels were used instead of regular thin wheels under all of the cars except on the engine. A single wheel, placed under the cow catcher, could have been removed and the four gold wheels on either side of it made to turn instead.

The head could have been designed to incorporate a little side-to-side motion

Some sort of identification specifically for the left and right legs; there’s no difference between them as they are now!

Perhaps a little more variety in the sound effects or another button for new effects.

Change the appearance of the On/Off switch so that it could be reached in robot form.

It’s interesting in its own ways, but a lot more could have been done to it to put it on par with the others in the series. But, it’s still a cool toy, no mistake about that. The LED is really intense and shines out to over a foot away from the gold seal, the sound effects are clear & loud, the head is well sculpted & painted, and it’s big and bulky. I recommend the DX Mahou Tetsujin Travelion more as a standalone set than I do as part of the “MagiRanger” line.

WolKaiser looks like an evil mecha, regardless of the crisp & elegant details. There were very few issues I had with the toy, or with the combinations. There are one or two little things that had me scratch my head, but that is a matter of personal taste.:

In 2005, the evil Infershia clan made their return to the surface of Earth since their defeat ten years ago in their secret battle against the peaceful Sky Saints of the mythical land Magitopia. Miyuki Oz, mother of five, is the only human who has known what is going on, and remains as the sole defender against the Infershia. But just before she is killed by one of the Infershia’s generals, she reveals to her children their family history as secret defenders, and gives to them wand-like Magi Phones, which allows them to access their magical legacy.

The powerful Infershia magician known as Wolzard is as dangerous as he is wrapped in mystery. When he first breached the Inferno Gate which had sealed the Infershia clan back for ten years, nothing was known about him, and he was able to use this to his advantage when he killed MagiMother, the Oz sibling’s mother. As a loyal servant of the evil emperor N. Ma, he carries one of his master’s eyes in his Jagan Shield to allow him to participate in the battles until he is fully awakened. As one of the Madoushi- a magician who believes magic is to be used for personal gain without limits in its use- Wolzard constantly baits and urges the five MagiRanger, especially MagiRed, to go to the next level of power. But his surprisingly unusual sense of honor sometimes compels him to save the MagiRanger, or even level the playing field if the odds are too much in favor of the Infershia.

Uuza Uru Ugaro!
[change- soldier- element]

Just as the MagiRanger can change their physical forms into giant MagiMajin, Wolzard can also make himself increase in size, though his appearance does not change. But this is usually only for the short term...

“Come fourth, Dark Magic Horse, Barikion!”

Uu Uru Zazare!
[(use) wand- (for) soldier- armament]

When he wants to inflict even more damage on his enemies, he then summons his magical stallion, Barikion through a magic portal from the underworld. Only appearing in a giant form when called, Barikion has a will of his own but no voice, though he always follows Wolzard’s instructions.

Uuza Touza Zanga!
[change- power- combination]

In Episode 01, Wolzard shocked the five newly formed MagiRanger by merging his giant self and Barikion into a powerful new magic combination, called WolKentauros. Based on the creature known as the centaur, from Greek mythology, WolKentauros wields both his Jagan Shield and a large black & gold spear.

“Your magic power has been raised. Barikion is brimming with power! Let us show them the power of the High King of Darkness!”

  [change- power- (of) soldier- combination]

As the MagiRanger were still learning to use the MagiKing to defeat Dark Beasts, Wolzard brought fourth a new to challenge. No longer partially transformed like the WolKentauros, this new black & gold humanoid combination showed them what real magical power was. In addition to this, the Jagan Shield now forms an integral part of the fusion, allowing him to access even more power through his slumbering master’s eye. WolKaiser would prove time and again to be the MagiKing’s superior even when they were able to deal several powerful strikes of their own upon him. But, for unknown reasons, he never brought himself to finish the job, and his strange sense of honor would have him frequently walk away from the battle. WolKaiser wields the Bari-Javelin, and can use it for many double slashing and magical attacks, including a finishing attack known as the Dark Madou Slash.

In contrast to MagiKing, there aren't a bunch of little 'M's, or in Wolzard's
case 'W's,
hidden all over WolKaiser's body and weapons.

Sets required for this combination:

    DX Majin Gattai WolKaiser

In Episode 09, MagiRed followed Barikion through a dark magic portal after a battle with the other MagiRanger against WolKaiser. He ended up in the same empty dimension as the elegantly armored creature, but was surprised to find that Barikion had taken the appearance of a normal-sized horse. He also found an arrow in him from the battle. Though he knew that Barikion was also responsible for his mother’s death, he helped the horse to remove the arrow. In return for his service, Barikion returned to the real world with the transformed MagiPhoenix riding on his back.

This unnamed riding combination puts MagiPhoenix in a less dominating partnership with Barikion than WolKentauros does, and looks a little more normal. MagiPhoenix snaps onto Barikion’s back in the same way he does to the larger MagiDragon using the tabs on the back of his upper legs. He can still wield his Phoenix Sword as well, but there are no reigns attached to Barikion’s head he can grasp like there are in the series.

  “Combined!?”

MagiPhoenix surprised the other MagiMajin- and Wolzard as well- when he formed a friendship combination with Barikion, called FireKaiser. This new form does not put MagiRed’s avatar-like form into a new cockpit, but rather causes him to assume full control over the combination. One of his finishing attacks, known as the Fire Spin Braid, ignites the large silver que on the back of his head, and then strike opponents repeatedly with the flaming whip. He can also wield an unnamed Bari-Javelin variant different from the one WolKaiser uses. After the Dark Beast was destroyed by FireKaiser, Barikion went back to Wolzard’s side. But he then told MagiRed that Barikion now acknowledged him as a warrior.

FireKaiser

Yuujou Gattai FireKaiser (back) is similar in almost every way to WolKaiser, except for two points:

When MagiKing is formed, MagiPhoenix has MagiFairy snap between his arms to become its chest. Barikion’s tail armor now goes there, becomes part of the chest, and also forms FireKaiser’s new head.

Instead of Barikion’s tail, neck & mane becoming the Bari-Javelin, FireKaiser’s spear uses his head, and neck & mane. This is because WolKaiser’s head is also Barikion’s, but FireKaiser’s isn’t.

MagiPhoenix provides FireKaiser with a new look by having a large “M” blaring on his chest. The large silver & gold que on his head is pretty cool too. Poseability is exactly the same as with WolKaiser. The alternate Bari-Javelin (which has no name) is really just the WolKentauros’ long spear, except FireKaiser grasps the long handle, not the small hidden peg.

Now, because MagiPhoenix and Wolzard have the same basic shape, they are interchangeable between the DX WolKaiser and DX MagiKing. Though these other combinations have never been seen onscreen, this means:

MagiPhoenix can join with Barikion to become an alternate version of WolKentauros

Wolzard can ride on Barikion’s back

Wolzard, with his Jagan Shield, can combine with the MagiTaurus, MagiMermaid, & MagiGaruda to become an alternate version of the MagiKing, but without MagiFairy & MagiPhoenix (though, I’m sure the MagiMajin would find this disturbing!)

Wolzard can ride on top of MagiDragon (though, I’m sure MagiDragon would find this disturbing!)

As of the posting of this review, the English version of 'MagiRanger', called 'Power
Rangers Mystic Force', has already been airing since February 2006. However, early
reports
from Bandai America suggest that the DX WolKaiser will not be making an appearance in American toy stores due to marketing strategies. They say that the black robot would not sell very well, though they may release it later in 2006 as a store-exclusive. They will, however, be releasing the rarer white-&-gold DX Tenkuu Gattai Saint Kaiser in a general release as the Deluxe Steedergon Fury Megazord. What the changes there are will be covered in another review on CollectionDX later.

There have been very few times in Super Sentai history where a DX version of a regular, non-hero mecha was made-

DX Daijinryuu (“Gousei Sentai DaiRanger”, 1993) appears towards the end of the series, but wasn’t aligned with either side of the conflict

DX Majuu Gattai Gao Hunter Evil (“Hyakujuu Sentai GaoRanger”, 2001) became Hyakujuu Gattai Gao Hunter Justice after an evil spirit was banished from the possessed GaoSilver. There were four different versions of this same set released; one was a repaint called Gao Hunter Blue Moon, and there was a special Korean variant that was all silver but this was a very rare set.

DX Ikazuchi Gattai Gouraijin (“Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger”, 2002) is controlled by the rival Gouraijer brothers, but then they allies with the heroes

DX Bakuryuu Gattai KillerOh (“Bakuryuu Sentai AbaRanger”, 2003) is evil through most of the series because AbareKiller joins the villains

DX Bakuryuu Gattai BakurenOh (“AbaRanger Deluxe”, 2003) is an evil mecha similar to the heroes’ own lead mecha, but is controlled by the movie’s villain

-so this adds to the value of the DX WolKaiser. Also, you usually can’t get a villain character unless it’s a standard action figure. However, all of the above Rangers eventually turned to the good side; Wolzard’s Darth Vader-like backstory is tragic, but will bring him around to the good side by the end of the series.

WolKaiser looks like an evil mecha, regardless of the crisp & elegant details. There were very few issues I had with the toy, or with the combinations. There are one or two little things that had me scratch my head, but that is a matter of personal taste. I am quite impressed with the DX Majin Gattai WolKaiser. Overall, I recommend it highly. If they’re anything like the WolKaiser and MagiKing, I’m anxiously looking forward to the other DX toys in this show’s line.

I also recommend that, if you like this design as well, when Bandai America finally gets their hands on it, you tell them that you want the Deluxe toys from the “Power Ranger Mystic Force” line left as is!

When one of the Infershia generals wants to increase the stakes, they use their dark magic to grow their Dark Beasts and Super Dark Beasts to gigantic proportions. As MagiRanger, the five Oz siblings call upon their respective Sky Saints to grant them more power; growing themselves to become powerful MagiMajin.

MagiTaurus - The MagiMajin form of MagiGreen (Makito Oz), he towers over even his own siblings’ alternate forms. Based on the creature known as the minotaur, from Greek mythology, he wields the heavy Taurus Axe as his weapon. MagiTaurus forms the body, legs, & arms of the MagiDragon; and he also forms the head, arms, upper & lower torso, and legs of the MagiKing.

MagiFairy - The MagiMajin form of MagiPink (Houka Oz), she is the smallest and most petite of the five, but she makes up for this with the ability to fly. Due to Houka-chan’s special skill at transforming herself into various objects, so, too, can MagiFairy change into different magical objects, including a large ball that can be thrown around by the others to perform one of their finishing attacks. MagiFairy forms the head of the MagiDragon; and she also forms part of the chest of the MagiKing.

MagiMermaid - The MagiMajin form of MagiBlue (Urara Oz), she is larger than her pink sister, but can fight alongside her two brothers with her own weapon, the trident-shaped Mermaid Spear. As her name suggests, MagiMermaid can change her legs into a fish tail-like form for underwater movement, though she is equally adept at land-based combat. MagiMermaid forms the tail of the MagiDragon; and she also forms half of the lower legs & feet of the MagiKing.

MagiGaruda - The MagiMajin form of MagiYellow (Tsubasa Oz), he can control his lightning element just as easily in this body. Based on the creature known as the garuda, one of the principal animal gods (King of Birds) from Hindu mythology, MagiGaruda has wings instead of arms, and can use them for various slashing attacks. MagiGaruda forms the back, neck, & wings of the MagiDragon; and he also forms the back and wings of the MagiKing.

MagiPhoenix - The MagiMajin form of MagiRed (Kai Oz), he leads his siblings into combat, and is equal in height to both MagiMermaid and MagiGaruda. Based on the creature known as the phoenix, from Russian mythology, he wields the thin Phoenix Sword, though most of his maneuvers look more like they came from a soccer game! MagiPhoenix forms no integral part of the MagiDragon; but he does form part of the chest & upper torso of the MagiKing.

On first glance, the five MagiMajin are an odd couple. MagiPhoenix, by far, is the most flexible- with two joints in the shoulders, two joints in the hips, and the knees. He has an unprecedented level of poseability not see in- well... ever in Super Sentai history for a smaller component robot! MagiTaurus is second with a fair-but-limiting set of arm joints. MagiGaruda has good shoulders and allows for a wide variety of poses, though in some positions he might fall over unless the legs are adjusted just so. MagiFairy, because of its +1" stature, is limited to small rigid shoulder joints. It has no legs because they're molded into one ABS piece, and then painted on. The thin dragonfly-related wings on its back are needed to support her on a carpet, but they just barely clear a hard surface, and allow the single-piece foot to hold her up. MagiMermaid, unfortunately, lost out on a lot. Her movement is severely limited to just her elbows, and even they turn out only about 10-degrees to either side, just enough to allow her to grip her Mermaid Spear. The legs can be rotated around to simulate her aquatic form, but it requires separating her and reassembling her; even then, it isn’t all that convincing a change, and it wasn’t mentioned in the instructions.

Call me crazy, but even through the bulky armor & limited poseability, MagiMermaid does show something of a feminine figure- with the thin waist and slightly round bust beneath the stylized blue "M". MagiFairy has less to worry about here since she is rather slim already, and has to be in order to serve as the head of the MagiDragon. In my opinion, this was a nice touch by Bandai, since most female-related humanoid robots from previous Super Sentai series usually just ignored this for the functionality of the DX set. It makes them a little more relatable to the magic robots that they really are.

The first combination is known as the MagiDragon, and it is impressive. MagiTaurus, MagiFairy, MagiMermaid, and MagiGaruda participate in this spell, which [the first time they performed it] made MagiPhoenix feel left out at first...

“Turn us into the legendary Ryuu! MaRyuu Gattai!”

Maagi Giruma Jinga!
[change- power- combination]

In this form, the consciousnesses of Makito, Houka, Urara, & Tsubasa merge together to become one mind within the body of the legendary MagiDragon. They do not think or talk separately, but think and act as one being. The MagiDragon uses its large wings to keep away from enemies, while launching powerful fireball attacks from a distance. It also has the large claws on its hands & feet, as well as the sharp blade on the end of its tail. MagiPhoenix can ride atop the combination, but operate separately from the combined minds. With him, he carries a combined weapon called the Phoenix Spear. Together, they can perform a fiery finishing attack known as the Magical Dragon Shoot.

The MagiDragon is an amazing design, and is pretty big too. The mouth can open and close a little, but the solid foot of the MagiFairy gets in the way, though it does resemble some kind of long tongue. MagiTaurus' arms serve as the arms for the dragon, though the hands seem a little strange being upside down. The legs are large enough to easily hold itself up without support whether it's carrying MagiPhoenix or not. Actually, with the way the transformation works, there is a little flexibility with how the legs can be posed; though any other position might compromise its balance, and it isn't mentioned in the instructions. The tail is composed of the body and back assembly of the MagiMermaid. It can't move much except for the end of the ABS tail, and it really only just hangs there by gravity, so don't turn it upside-down! The way MagiGaruda's wings unfold to give the MagiDragon a larger wingspan is interesting, as is how it extends its chest to become the MagiDragon's neck.

In order to go up against a particularly powerful Dark Beast, the five MagiRanger performed a new spell they just learned, involving all five of them this time. MagiPhoenix was anxious to perform the complex spell, but MagiGaruda smacked him over the head and thought that he was childish for suggesting using it without practicing it first. However, the other three agreed with the decision.

"Turn us into the Majin-Oh. Majin Gattai!"

Maagi Giruma Magi Jinga!

Instead of just merging their MagiMajin forms together like with the MagiDragon, the five MagiRanger were surprised to find that they were new avatars of their own souls within the MagiKing’s cockpit- appearing as chess pieces on a giant chessboard ! They can interact with themselves, but their combined MagiMajin bodies act as one. They use the symbols on the pedestals below them and their Magi Stick weapons to conduct commands and attacks. Its hand held weapon, the King Caliber, is used as both a sword, and as a wand to direct magical attacks at opponents, including the finisher King Caliber Mahou Slash. The King Caliber is composed of the Phoenix Spear, Taurus Axe, and a spare piece that is stored on MagiMermaid's back.

The MagiKing is an intriguing cross between a futuristic knight, and a wizard of fantasy- even incorporating a pointed wizard's hat on its head, and pointed-toe boots! The MagiDragon's head (MagiFairy), placed at the center of the MagiKing's chest, merges well with the large stylized "M" on its chest. And there is a simple wing & feather pattern on its shoulders. There's a pair of silver & yellow wings that drape over its shoulders like a short cape.

Just as with the MagiDragon, the MagiKing can deploy its wings for flight, and initiate attacks from the sky. They first used this particularly powerful flying finisher against one of the Infershia's transformed generals, Majin Gattai WolKaiser.

"Magical Climax! King Caliber- Tenkuu Mahou Slash!"

The deployed wings on the MagiKing's back seem fragile and more for display than for flying, but they have a limited number of positions they can snap into. The only difference for the MagiGaruda between the MagiKing and the MagiDragon forms is that the chest remains retracted rather than extended for when it's used as the neck of the dragon.

For those of you wondering what the differences are between the DX Majin Gattai MagiKing from "Mahou Sentai MagiRanger", and its English-speaking counterpart, the Deluxe Titan Megazord from "Power Rangers Mystic Force", well, let's say they must think American children are afraid of too much paint:

All paint on all of the lower legs of each separate Titanzord has been removed. This is especially noticeable on the Butterfly (MagiFairy), Griffin (MagiGaruda), and Phoenix (MagiPhoenix) Titanzords. While the yellow paint remains on the legs of the Griffin, the silver was not added.

The paint on the wrists and horns of the Minotaur Titanzord (MagiTaurus) has been removed.

The color of the plastic on the Mermaid Titanzord's (MagiMermaid) knees has been switched from blue to plain light gray.

All molds and materials seem to be the same between the MagiKing and Titan Megazord.

At first glance, the DX MagiKing is an amazing design, plus it brought back the third alternate mode for the same set. But there were a few things that made me go “What [on Earth] were you thinking, Bandai!?”

Even though the King Caliber sword has a generous handle, only the tip of the handle can fit into the holes in the hands.

MagiMermaid’s arms & torso could have been designed to have rotating shoulders, or at least forward-rotating elbows.

And even though its poseability is some of the greatest I’ve ever seen, I thought some elbow joints could have been built into the MagiPhoenix, and refined on the MagiTaurus.

Even though there is a knee joint on the MagiTaurus, it is there to serve only the MagiDragon, and maybe the MagiKing. It could easily have been set up so the MagiMajin’s legs could swing forward as well.

Perhaps the MagiGaruda could have has some alternate changes between the two larger combos, or easily some more-poseable legs so a wider range of positions with the wings could be reached, but this doesn’t bother me much.

From articles I’ve read online, a tab could be cut off from under four of the MagiMajin’s heads, and allow them to turn side-to-side. (I wouldn’t recommend this unless you don’t mind risking permanently damaging the toy.)

But on the other hand, the MagiKing incorporated some good stuff too that made me applaud Bandai’s imaginative designs:

The intricacy of transformation of the separate elements and the combos is fantastic and more detailed that I’ve seen in a long time, especially for a Super Sentai robot.

The three hand weapons came together to form the King Caliber sword; a good way to eliminate excess accessories, as was the Phoenix Spear combo weapon.

The metallic-blue paint was a nice change from the typical silver, white, gold, or black highlights.

Keeping MagiPhoenix out of the MagiDragon combo so that it could ride on it, was a neat idea.

Dozens of little “M”s were hidden in plain sight all over each MagiMajin and their weapons, and prompted a search for all of them.
• MagiGaruda’s head, in keeping with its mythological roots, was a bird’s head rather than just another mask-like head, and it had wings instead of arms & hands.

The overall size of the five MagiMajin varies greatly, from the smaller MagiFairy (3¾ inches to the wings’ base) to the taller MagiTaurus (8¾ inches to the horns). That is a neat change they threw in there as opposed to having them all about the same size, regardless of their function.

The MagiKing had a limited poseability with its hips and knees; but it was an option not seen since the DX Kakure Dai Shōgun from “Ninja Sentai KakuRanger” (1994) (aka the Deluxe Ninja Megazord, from “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” Season-3, 1995)

There is a little cross-compatibility between some of the MagiKing’s snap-on joints and some previous Sentai robots, such as the DX Tokusou Gattai DekaRanger Robo from “Tokusou Sentai DekaRanger” (2004), seen here.

Even though MagiTaurus took up most of the structure of the MagiKing, and a large part in the MagiDragon, they were able to make it work without compromising too much the importance of the other four MagiMajin to the combos.

The five MagiMajin weren’t just some more bulky humanoid robots that combined with one another; they tried to keep them in some sort of human proportion.

I am very, very impressed with the DX Majin Gattai MagiKing , plain and simple. It took some big steps in design without the gimmicks or electronics of previous years. It had a few loose ends as far as design, but I can overlook those easily. I recommend it highly. If they’re anything like the MagiKing, I’m anxiously looking forward to the other DX toys in this show’s line.
