Hellboy
I dropped the ball on this one – I did the video review but never did the written review. Time to rectify that.
The packaging is elegant, with a slip cover over a window box.
This is a fantasitc figure. It’s a comic-accurate Hellboy, as opposed to the two different movie versions. This version replicates Hellboy as he was originally envisioned by creator Mike Mignloa.
The figure stands 6″ talland is made of a variety of materials. The overcoat is cloth with wire embeded into the edges. This allows the coat to be posed along with the figure. The body of the figure is a mix of hard PVC and pliable rubber. For example, the chest is rubber, with a durable internal skeleton to allow for natural posing. Of course, with any rubber product, there is the risk of the rubber drying out over time, but lets hope today’s rubber lasts longer than that used 20 years ago.
Hellboy’s stone hand is fully articulated, but in this version it looks rather mechanical. While I appreciate the range of motion the barbell joint gives the thumb, its sort of glaring and obviously out of place.
Elbows are double jointed, and the left hand is removable to swap with variant hands.
There’s a lot of great detail on the belt. The gun holster is removable and splits open at the top rather than at the clip on the side, but I can imagine it’s too small to make a workable fastner at this size. The cross is on a real metal chain.
Hellboy includes a gun that fits well in the gun-holding hand.
Also inluded is a variant open hand.
Superhero landing pose!
Hellboy;s coat is removable. You will need to remove the right hand to take the coat off.
Note the gap at the bottom of the chest. Here you can see a bit of the internal skeleton inside. Not sure how they would have fixed this and you only see it at extreme poses.
You can see the great range of motion that the flexible chest provides. There are joints all through the back and neck.
The tail can be rotated but there are no joints or wires to change poses. It mostly acts as a stand to keep Hellboy upright as he is top-heavy.
There are two versions of this figure. This is the regular retail version, but there is a Dark Horse exclusive version that comes with some additional accessories, such as a sword and flame effects.
