Lion Mechazord

Hey kids, want a nice big toy of the Gosei Grand Megazord from Power Rangers Megaforce? Well, get ready to spend some money and do some hunting!

The Lion Mechazord is one of three sets you will need to create the Gosei Grand Megazord. Normally Bandai would package these in one box and sell them as a set like they did with the Gosei Great Megazord, but for some reason they decided to split this set up. I have no Idea why they did this, and if I was a parent I would be frustrated when I realized how little I can do with the set by itself.

The Lion Mechazord is the zord of the Robo Knight, the 6th Ranger in Megaforce. He’s shown in the window of the package and looks like a bonus figure, but he’s really part of the set.

The toy is a complete re-mold from it’s Japanese counterpart, with minor functional changes. It’s designed to be compatible with all the Megazords released from Megaforce.

The appearance of the Lion Mechazord is that of a battle tank. In Lion mode the Robo Knight folds up and becomes the head of the Lion Mechazord.

The toy rolls freely on 6 hard plastic wheels, and there are missile launchers on either side. These are friction-launching missiles, and you need to push them from the back to get them to launch.

For Tank mode, you remove the head and transform it back into Robo Knight. You need to flip over the tail section to form the cannon, and unfold and turn around the panels on the back to reveal a seat for Robo Knight. Small control arms fold out from the panels, and a peg indicates where the figure should sit.

This is about all you can do with this toy without the additional sets. It’s boring.

To create the Gosei Grand Megazord, you need to also purchase the Knight Brothers Zords – Sealion and Skylion. These are packaged as motorcycles with riders to justify the separate purchase.

Transformation is simple, and the combined zord is rather large in stature. I really like the look of the Gosei Grand, and it feels good to fiddle with. Articulation is limited to the shoulders, and you can sort of rotate the legs where the knees connect. This is a simple, low-cost toy so we can’t expect it to do much, but when you factor in the three sets I guess it’s ok.

If you already have the Gosei Great Megazord, you can combine the two to form the Gosei Great Grand Megazord.

This combination is a little less solid due to the sheer number of parts, but it looks alright. The real fun was the assembly. It’s basically a brick in this mode.

The tail of the dragon and the cannon combine to form a weapon of some sort. It technically needs another Hedder – the Beetle Zord, to complete it.

So you can see, the Lion Mechazord is a gateway to other cool combinations, but in itself is sort of lacking as a stand alone toy.
