In Getter Robo Armageddon, scientist-turned-crazy-man Dr. Saotome joins forces with shape-shifting aliens to unleash Shin Getter Dragon’s destructive power on earth and decimates the population. To quote the back of the ADV DVD box set for the Getter Robo Armageddon: ‘” They wiped out 99% of the human race, and that is when the fun started.” In the aftermath of the devastation, the survivors must once again face Dr. Saotome and the aliens, which look to destroy the few remaining humans.

Pose2

Luckily for humanity, Shin Getter 1 is around to kick some old man and alien Invader butt.

From the Getter Robo Armageddon OVA, comes one of the most recent entries in the Super Robot Chogokin line. The Super Robot Chogokin Shin Getter 1 is a pretty good rendition of this long-limbed mechanical titan.

However, Bandai did take some liberties with the design of this toy. Immediately upon opening the package, I noticed that Shin Getter’s head is a bit too small.  Also, the balls at the shoulder’s and thighs are not part of the mecha’s design in the OVAs. However, they are functional pieces of the toy that we will discuss a bit later.

Finally, a minor nitpick I have with the design is that the little indent at the top of the robot’s waist should actually be a cutout. But that is such a minor detail that it can be easily overlooked.

The thing I love about the Super Robot Chogokin line is that each entry in the line is uniquely engineered to produce a toy that not only looks good but also moves in marvelous ways.

The Shin Getter 1 has a ton of articulation, so it can pull off just about any pose you may ask of it. Each ankle is on a ball joint, which can be extended out for some extra range of motion. The knees are double jointed and they have a ton of range, thanks to the fact that the rears of the lower legs have a collapsible panel at the top.

Knee

The robot can even kneel.

Kneel

The thighs have a thigh swivel and are connected to the body by a ball joint.

Hip

As a Super Robot Chogokin release, the Shin Getter 1 metal content is present only in the lower legs. This gives the toy extra stability.

Kick

So our Getter friend can do a high kick withou breaking a sweat! Although getting a good footing on just one leg requires some patient due to Shin Getter 1’s flat smooth soles, which provide very little traction. But with both legs on the ground, the toy has no issue keeping its balance, even within wide stances.

Legs Spread

The midsection has a couple of joints. In the front there is a ball joint and in the back there is a hinge. This combination of these two joints gives Shin Getter numero uno a lot of range with its midsection. You can lean it forward enough to perform a proper bow, and backwards it has some decent range also.

Lean

While these joints provide the Getter with a great deal of upper body motion, using the full range of the joints ends up revealing some gaps between the body panels of the Getter. In the front there is a tiny gap between the midsection and waist. In back there is a much more noticeable opening between the upper back and the lower back.

The wings are also articulated; they are on a ball swivel which allows them to rotate a full 360 degrees and also move up and down on the swivel.

Each shoulder has two balls that connect the arm to the body.

Shoulder

The inside ball is on a hinge that allows it to move forward. The outer ball joint acts as a swivel and also a ratchet joint. This outer ball that connects to the arm can also extend out, for some extra range of motion. If you don’t need the extra range, you can push the ball into their sockets. This effectively hides the balls, which makes the toy look more true to the source material; in Getter Robo Armageddon, the shoulder and thigh ball joints are not present. The head is on a ball swivel, so it can move 360 degrees laterally and also look up and down. As a bonus, the head is on a panel the can be extended up and back. This allows the robot to look forward, which is great for when you want to pose your Shin Getter soaring through the skies.

Fly2

One gimmick for this toy is that the lower arms of the mecha and the ring above them are removable. This really serves no function at this point. Perhaps Bandai has something planned for this gimmick.

Removeable

But what would Shin Getter be without its weapons? There is a separate panel for the abdomen, which can be used to replicate Shin Getter 1′ about to pull off a Getter Beam.

Waist2

Gettaaa Beammu!

Unfortunately, there were no effect parts included in this set to give this pose some extra authenticity. But that is okay, since we also get Shin Getter 1’s big ass weapon… well one of them anyways.

Scythe4

The Getter Scythe is included with Shin Getter 1. If you want the Getter Tomahawk for Shin Getter 1, you will end up having to buy the Dynamic Option Set.In the absence of the Getter Tomahawk, the Scythe provides the means for getting some good attack poses out of Shin Getter 1.

ScytheScythe3

The Scythe looks pretty decent. The blade is a metallic silver color, while the rest of the scythe is molded in gray. The latter makes the weapon look very plasticky.

Scythe5

Besides the aforementioned extras, you get five hands for the Shin Getter 1. All of the hands have been featured in the previous pics, so I didn’t photographing them by themselves.

Finally, you get a plastic clip for attaching Shin Getter one to a stand.

Fly3

All in all, the SRC Shin Getter 1 is a good representation of robot that has already been released in a couple of other lines.

Stance

Since I don’t own any of the others, I can’t really comment on how the Super Robot Chogokin release stacks up to the rest. But I can say that the SRC Shin Getter 1 is a fun toy to play with thanks to the fact that Bandai loaded it with a ton of articulation. It does have a few flaws, but that these can be easily overlooked, unless you really wanted the Getter Tomohawk.
