Superman
In comic book folklore, no superhero has been ever more synonymous with the valiant words of truth and justice. A symbol of heroism and strength embodied in a blue suit and red tights with a flowing cape to boot. Under the vision of Mezco Toyz, the last son of Krypton has finally arrived on my office shelf…Superman!
Mezco Toyz has created another wonderful piece for their one:12 collection with their take on Superman. They have taken the classic essence of the Bronze Age Superman and added their own realistic twist. Superman has all the definitive pieces you expect: The red cape, blue suit, red tights, yellow belt, and the ’S’ symbol all prominently displayed in front of his chest. More details on these aspects of his costume later.
To speak of the sculpting, the face is well done and reminds me a lot of the Curt Swann artwork of Superman. The blue highlights along with the signature curl in his hair stand out but I wish there was a bit more application detail with the paint on the face. It would have helped bring the details out more. But the work here is clean and neat.
The costume: I love the cape with the ’S’ symbol on the back. The fabric used is a stretchy lycra material and does not restrict the articulation of the figure. A great choice of the material used. However, care must be taken when displaying the figure as snags on a fabric are a real problem if not too careful. The red tights, on the other hand. is made from a “pleather” like material which contrasts with the rest of the costume. It’s nice but can be somewhat of an eyesore since it’s of a different material. I wish they would have used the same lycra material for the tights but its a minor gripe.
Superman comes with some essential and fun accessories: interchangeable hands, an alternate “angry” heat vision portrait, a glass container with the city of Kandor inside, a fragment of kryptonite, and breakaway chains. It also comes with a standard Mezco Toyz display stand and flight wires to hold his cape up in flight poses. It works relatively well but can also be cumbersome to use in practice.
There have been many Supermen created over the years. And what Mezco Toyz brings to the table here is their classic rendition of the Big Blue. The costume, for the most part, captures the very essence of his classic look and the sculpting work is impeccable. A bit more paint application could have been used to the face to bring out its features and I’m subjective on the use of “pleather” tights for Super. But the pros far outweigh the cons. Mezco Toyz classic Superman is a magnificent piece to display for any collector!
