DX Black Max Victory Robo

Original MSRP: 11,000
Toy Number: GD-15B

The DX Black Max Victory Robo box set was released by Bandai in 1999 in their Chogokin line. This was a special-release item that actually DOES appear in GoGo Five (originally I thought it did not, but many of you have corrected me). For a few years around this time, Bandai released several black version sentai toys, but the practice stopped in the mid 2000’s.

This set is super sexy. It takes the already spectacular Victory Robo and Liner Boy, and re-molds them in a phenomenal black and gold color scheme. Black and Gold + box set + chogokin = love.

The box features nice graphics appropriately showcasing the blackness of it all. There’s a handle on the top to carry it around, but no graphics on the back.

Inside are the two robots, ready to be assembled. We won’t go too much into the mechanics of each as we’ve already covered Liner Boy and Victory Robo.

Victory Robo breaks down into his five components. They are the same as the original release, just black and gold. Even the stickers have been converted to black and gold versions. I thought about maybe not stickering these up, but I’m glad I did. I did notice that some of the stickers that have to go around curved surfaces have lifted up a little.

Note the stickers on top starting to lift a little.

Combined he looks stunning. I love that most of the metal parts got a gold coating, it makes it feel like you have something precious.

Liner Boy always surprises me with it’s heft. He’s very chunky and he does not do much in robot mode, but his real purpose is as an accessory to the Black Max victory Robo, or leading the Grandliner.

In robot mode, his arms move up and down, and he can weild his shield / gun.

In Maxliner mode, he’s got some wheels that lets him roll around freely. The wings can also open up for flight mode.

The engine nozzles on the back are beautiful gold chrome.

Combining Victory Robo and Liner Boy is essentially like giving Victory Robo Liner Boy pants. The lower half of Liner Boy opens up to accept the lower half of Victory Robo. The mid section of Liner Boy is added upside down, then the rest of Victory Robo goes on top. Add on shoulder, arm and face armor and you are good to go.

The gun on the sheild can be turned outward as well.

One thing I like about this set is that Maxliner looks much better in this color scheme leading the Grandliner.
