I've been going to Toy Fair for... Seven years now? I've seen the "designer" toy companies go from a handful to commandeering a whole aisle, to back a few booths. But this year? NOTHING.
In fact, the only toys that can be considered "urban" or "designer" were being offered by major manufacturers.
So much for that whole movement. Back to the underground where you belong.
I was at the Wild Planet booth and saw these guys called Squatz. yeah, I know, but the idea is kind of neat. You can buy a set of one or two, and they are only identified by faction. So you can get say a Pirate set, but you don't know which pirates you will get. From there you unwrap them and drop them in water and then they FIZZ!
Once the fizzing is done, you get a collectible Squatz character. There's a whole bunch available, and even chase figures.
Designer aesthetics aside, it's a neat enough idea for a toy. But it's things like this that make designer toy fans squirm, and I don't really have a problem with that.
