Designer Con 2012
On Saturday November 3rd, 2012 CollectionDX was fortunate to have a booth at DesignerCon 2012 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA. Having always wanted to host a booth at a toy convention I volunteered to be the point-man for CDX for this wonderful event. This was not my first time at Designer Con as a couple of years ago I also reported on DesignerCon 2010 for CDX.
DesignerCon is Southern California’s premier designer toy convention featuring many of the artists, studios and manufactures who are current movers of the Designer toy movement. What I personally like about designer con is that a large portion of the vendors present produces their own figures, toys and art. Take vintage toy art design, punk rock ethics, graffiti art, cute rabbits with knives in their backs and Japanese sofubi with a pinch of “Fun” thrown in and you have DesignerCon 2012.
I arrived at the Convention center early to set up our booth. Since I am not really a toy collector I was concerned of not having anything to display to represent the vintage toy aspect of CDX. I decided to display my rare collection of Bandai’s 1980’s line of figures called Spiral Zone. Its very rare to see a these displayed and it was nice to discuss Spiral Zone with many of the attendees including a few Japanese attendees who have not seen them since the 1980’s.
No convention booth is complete without guests and the CDX Booth was more than blessed to have the partnership of Lili Chin and Eddie Mort that form FWAK Animation, known for the animated series Mucha Lucha!. They brought an incredible studio animation reel that included some of their latest projects including Ska-Ville, a Skanking dance primer for kids, the futball themed Chicharito Unidos and Japanese swordplay influenced Dead Ringo. Lili also brought her Boston terrier art products inspired by her own Boston terrier named Boogie.
Our second group of guests were Curt Clesdestine and Colin Fleming the lead actor and animation Director of the 2010 John Garside film Max Neptune and The Menacing Squid. CDX was fortunate to screen the film in our booth and had a nice crowd of people watching the film throughout the day. CDX was also fortunate to screen the latest chapter of Colin’s latest animation project, Lloyd The Rockin’ Unicorn.
By far the best part of the day was meeting many readers and fans of CDX. It was great hearing input and comments from our many readers in person. All of us here at CDX thank you for stopping by!
We were in a very good area of the convention floor next to the main stage and we fortunate to witness the largest blind box opening, with participants numbering over 100 people. Talk about historic!
The one problem of being a host is just that, I had to be at the booth at all times so unfortunately I was not able to walk the convention floor like I wanted. I was able to snap a few photos of some of the items that were at the show including this wonderful display of art and items designed and using Lego’s as its base.
What I like best about Designer Con is the crossover appeal of the attendees at the convention. I bumped into people I know from the LA music scene, the LA Art Community, Macross Con and the animation industry. This is why I believe Designer Con is such a great event as it has broad appeal to the art and toy minded tendencies in all of us. Looking forward to DesignerCon 2013, which is planned to be two-day event next year. A special thanks to event coordinator and all around great person Ayleen for making our appearance at DesignerCon a fantastic experience.
