On Saturday, June 26th Landon Donvan and the USA team faced Ghana on the pitch at the World Cup in South Africa. Although I had not missed one USA game a previous engagement of my IPMS Ontario Model club annual MiniCon 2010 messed up my chances at watching the game live. Although I was psychically there in Ontario my heart was with the USA team in South Africa.
As I groaned through the day with my Nike USA scarf around my neck and with having to read updates of the game on my cellphone, I found out the sad truth that the USA lost. I believe the USA has a good team and we can only move up, I will hold my head high for USA in 2014.
OK enough of the CollectionDX Sports Talk!
Looking back I actually had a great time at IPMS Ontario's Minicon 2010. We had a lot of great entries in many categories including Ships, Science Fiction, Airplanes, figures, tanks and cars. It was better turnout from last years economic slowdown and a good sign that things are looking up when you have modelers traveling great distances to hit up a local IPMS contest.
One highlights of the show was a USA WWII American T-28 Super Heavy Tank model kit that won the much coveted George Skropos Presidents Award. Almost Science Fiction like, it was a four tread heavy tank that was never put into production and designed to fight German Super Heavy Tanks. Although I do not know much about tanks in general, the kit and subject was mindblowing!
Some other highlights include a multi vehicle WWII Bridge crossing diorama, the huge Polar Lights Seaview kit, Revell's USA WWII Submarine kit, a lifelike bust of a British navel captain, a tall CP-3O figure and a beautiful clear Mach 5 from Speed Racer. Even yours truly won a 2nd place award for my vaucuform Wings72 WWII 1/72 IJN Midget Submarine in the scratch build category. Although it is a small category with few entries it is a difficult category to place in as only the best of the best ever attempt to scratch build kits.
IPMS Ontario MiniCon is not one of the biggest shows in the circuit, it is one of the best and it is always great to be a part of the show.
