So, we're walking over to Javitz on the first day of toy fair and there are a bunch of protestors outside, grandmothers actually, protesting the war through that old protest song that mentions GI Joe... I can understand them not wanting to glorify war through toys, but honestly, Todays GI Joe have more in common with James Bond than actual warfare. I wanted to tell them, hey, Hasbro isn't even in this building, they are in the Times Center...
But the day before, GI Joe was our first stop on the showroom floor. The goal was to break all the attendees into 5 groups, each assigned a number. Depending in which number you were, you would start your tours at a certain place. However, once people entered the showroom, all bets were off and people migrated over to whatever toyline they were most interested in.
To say the collector media were like sharks around bait would be an understatement. People were jockeying for permission, arms over shoulders, cameras in faces, to get snaps of the latest product. Some took their one shot of each. Others, with their cameras on burst mode, took dozens of shots of each toy, hogging the view for others.
I stood back a bit and watched this mob scene. Was I really one of them?
I'll be honest - I don't collect GI Joe, I don't know much about GI Joe. A few things looked cool - the vehicles were nice, but really, the selection was uninspiring - probably due to this being a non-movie year. Hell, I haven't even seen the movie.
One thing that caught my eye was these powered suits, but then Adam noticed they were re-tooled Sigma Six armored suits, retrofit to fit 3 3/4 figures.
Also, the big HISS tank was cool, but that's about it for me.
Here's the press release:
