Colossus Titan & Attack Playset

Attack on Titan is the anime du jour so naturally we are getting flooded with product. Sadly most of it is now coming out after the first season has completed, with no air date for season 2 in sight. I pre-ordered this Nendoroid when it first came up and maybe I jumped the gun a little, as much cooler merchandise has been announced since then. But I was taken by the cute Colossal Titan and all the parts and therefore my common sense took a vacation and I ended up getting it.

This is my first Nendoroid. I’ve handled them briefly and never really saw the draw of the line. It’s mostly geared to cute SD versions of anime girls, but like the figma series, every once in a while they will include a character I care about.

In this case it’s a mini-playset of the Colossal Titan attacking the wall “Maria”. (Yes, each wall has a name).

The toy comes in a very attractive box which is much larger than standard Nendoroid boxes. It has a full visibility window in front with a neat die-cut tab at the top, mimicking the Colossal Titan peering over the wall. Inside there are a lot of parts. This fills me with anxiety lately, as I am afraid one tray pop and the parts are going to be scattered and lost. Some of the parts are REALLY small.

Starting with the Colossal titan itself, you can see that applying the Nendoroid style to the 60-meter tall monster has an unsettling effect. I think that’s why I like it. The figure stands 100mm tall and while it can stand without the base, it is better off attached to it.

The paint and detail are nice, with no issues. Articulation is fine considering the size of the toy.

The Colossal titan comes with two faceplates. One replicates the look of the titan in the anime, and one has a Nendoroid-style face, with large eyes and opening mouth.

An extra set of hands and biceps/shoulders are included to allow the titan to put his hands up on the wall. These are a pain in the ass because when you move the arms up to position, they pop out from the body. Also the elbow joint is just a swivel joint that separates when you move it.

The Wall Maria is 1/4 of a circle with three panels. The middle panel has the Wall Maria logo tampo printed on and is swappable with a damaged section. The construction of the panels makes me think that there will be additional walls and sections coming that will attach together to form a circle.

There are three additional Titans included with the set. Each has a clear arm that plugs into the back and into a clear round base.

First is a “Secret” Titan that looks like a naked Andy Richter. Judging by the pose, I’d say this is an Aberrant Titan.

Next up is a 15 Meter titan who has the ability to hold a victim in his hands.

Finally, another 15 Meter Titan is included, but this one is special. This is the one that ate Eren’s mother. It features a moveable arm and opening jaw. Creepy.

The set comes with a bunch of little houses that look suspiciously like houses from Monopoly. There are too many of them to fit them all on the stand with the Titans.

Three members of the Survey Corps are included with vapor trails from their Maneuver Gear. They plug into any of the buildings chimneys.

Also included with the set are microscopic villagers and Survey Corps members. These guys are tiny, about as big as a grain of rice. They are designed to be in scale with the titans, but obviously not to the buildings.

There’s an odd effect that looks like a cloud, or a sigh from the Colossus’s mouth. It attaches via a clear stand that has a tendency to tip over due to being top heavy.

When the set is complete it looks cool, but I am disapointed that there’s nothing to plug the buildings or figures into. Everything just sort of rests wherever, and the slightest bump sends them all tumbling over. I would have much rather had them secured to the base.

I also wish there was a way to make the tiny Survey Corps members swarm or attack the Colossal Titan.

In the end I ended up putting all the little parts in a ziplock bag and just displaying the Titan himself. My setup would have this getting knocked over and I would lose parts in no time. It’s neat and all, but I doubt I will get another Nendoroid unless it’s a character I really love.
