The Dragon Quest franchise has been around for many years. While the stories of the franchise live mainly on the discs and cartridges of gaming systems, the franchise has branched off into the anime/manga realm a couple of times; one such foray is the anime/manga series Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken. Dai no Daibouken tells the story of Dai, a young hero-in-training named Dai, who must go on a quest (or great adventure if you will) to defeat the evil Demon King.
Aiming to bring back the magic of this series, Figurama Collectors has released a 1/6 statue of the eponymous Dai.
The packaging for the figure is nice. It contains all of the information one comes to expect from a toy box: product images, manufacturing information, character information, etc. The product information panel features the statues number.
Being a 100 piece run, this number indicates which of these pieces you own.
The statue number is also featured on a card of authenticity that is inside of the box.
The statue comes with a nice, hefty base to securely keep Dai in his place. The bottom of the base features the dragon symbol that appears on Dai’s forehead whenever he awakens his hidden power.
On the back of the base, we have the same information featured on box panel I discussed earlier.
The statue requires minimal, and I do mean minimal, assembly. Besides attaching the figure to the base, you have to attach the short sword to its handle and the longer sword to the back of the figure.
Once the figure is assembled and mounted on its based, it looks really good.
The figure stands at about 10.5 ince tall.
The face sculpt is a little stylized. But that isn’t a deal-breaker in my book.
The sculpt of the figure is nice. So nice in fact, that still images don’t quite capture the beauty of the figure. If you want to see the dimension of the sculpt a little better, check out my unboxing/review video.
The one the cool things about this figure is that it is hand painted. It’s nice to think that somebody out there individually painted these 100 pieces for each individual that owns it. The painting is neatly done, but not always perfect. Which may just make each of these pieces unique.
I like the character that the hand painted lines gives the toy, it reminds me of the hand-drawn animation of the past. The hand-painted details also give credence to the fact that this piece was not a mass-produced toy coming off an assembly line.
All in all, this is a very nice statue of Dai. The toy set out to recapture the magic that this character brought to many adult’s childhood and it succeeded with me. It reminded me of a time when I used to watch Saturday morning anime in Mexico.
