D-Spec Rex

So, I guess I’m a fan of SD style robots now. When did that happen? Anyways, Metal Gear Dspec Rex is the newest addition to Megahouse’s Variable Action line. Rex comes packed in the standard VA lightweight cardboard window box. Included in the box is Rex, a tiny Liquid and Solid Snake, and a very nice display stand with articulated support arm.

To me, this version of Rex doesn’t scream “SD”. Upon close inspection, you will notice that the “nose” has been shortened, and “face” flattened and widened. Still, I think most people would not recognize this as a super deformed figure at first glance.

Rex’s height varies depending on the pose, but hes somewhere between 4 and 5 inches tall.

There is an absolute TON of detail on the figure, as well as a massive amount of moving parts. Both of the weapons pods on the shoulders are articulated, the bottom turret can swivel left and right, and up and down, the head can move left and right, as well as up and down, and the backpack can move up and down. The armor on the side of the legs are on ball joints, and the “toes” can move up and down.

The legs have a ton of articulation and moving parts.

The paint is decent, there is some sloppy parts here and there, but it’s only noticeable upon close inspection (or when using a macro lens, as is the case in some of these pictures). I would have liked some more paint apps, but the figure doesn’t feel lacking.

The tiny Liquid and Solid snake are a great addition, but they are brutally hard to keep standing. Rex’s cockpit opens and either figure can be inserted inside. Each mini figure has 5 points of articulation.

The figure itself has surprisingly good balance. The included stand isn’t needed, but it’s always nice when a company includes one.

I really like this figure. It looks fantastic on my desk, and is a ton of fun to pose. My only real complaint with the figure is the price. 7620 yen (about $65) before shipping is a bitter pill to swallow for a 5 inch figure. I personally bought it because I’ve always wanted a Rex, but not enough to shell out for the 3A versions. I also like the size of this version a lot. That said, unless you have a tiny SD shaped Metal Gear hole in your collection like me, this figure is probably an easy pass at the current price.
