Godzilla

I got this cute little guy at an antiques store in historic Plymouth Massachusetts.

Tell me if you have done this one before. I was on vacation with the family and we had a string of rainy days that caused us to venture into town. Like any old New England seaside town, Plymouth is littered with these little antique stores. Most of them are filled with period antiques and nautical stuff, but I always check them out in the hopes that some random Japanese toy has made their way inside. Occasionally, I luck out.

Make no mistake, this is no treasure, but it sure feels like it when you spot it amongst the other unrelated antiques.

And so I cherished it as a cool little find in an out of the way place.

This Godzilla comes from the 1988 Eh?Guu! line (get it? EG-GU?). It’s a neat little SD toy with a twist.

The package is a clear top taped to a cardboard bottom. The same packaging was used for all the figures in the line, and the only indication as to which one you got was the sticker.

The oversized egg has a flat spot to lay it on the ground.

Turn the tip to wind up the inner mechanism and let it go. After a few seconds the egg will split open and release the SD Godzilla, primed to walk.

Time has not been kind to the mechanism on this particular toy though. While the toy still pops open, it doesn’t have enough “oomph” to make Godzilla walk.

I think I enjoyed finding this more than I enjoy the toy itself.
