Kamen Rider OOO Putotyra Combo

Before reading this review, please read the one I did on Tatoba combo here beforehand as both have the same base body and same gimmick so I’m not gonna talk about all the same stuff but I will highlight anything that is different in this guy :).

Greetings to my fellow brothers and sisters in toys collecting or whoever it is that’s reading this. This time around, I present to you, the final form of Kamen Rider OOO, the SIC Kamen Rider OOO Putotyra combo.

The box is still in theme with the previous OOO release so yeah… Here’s the box..

Malaysia <3 All the goodies are laid out in two layers of tray. You will be getting: The first tray:

– the figure
– two longer horns
– a tail
– the medagabryu(that axe looking thing)
– barrel attachment for the axe
– three cell medal

The second tray:

– a pair of ‘External Fin’(the purple wing official name)
– a pair of ‘cape’(the silver ‘wing’)
– alternate back piece
– three clear chest piece
– pair of holding things hand
– pair of splayed open hand
– a right medal-holding hand
– some stand parts(the base of the stand is below the silver ‘wing’)

Right out of the box, you need to attach the ‘cape’ part to complete the figure. Just peg it in on the back piece and we’re ready to go

The purple combo, the invincible combo or the dinosaur combo, this form is known by those names. Being the most powerful form of OOO, the SIC renditions do not disappoint me (as usual :p). This redesign is emanating some dark and powerful presence. The detail and sculpt is superb but this time around the QC on my copy SUCKS. BIG TIME SUCKS. I’ll show it to you guys as we go along.

I’m not sure why but the finishing looks very rough on certain part like this one. It looks fine from a distant but up close, this is it.

I adore this paint scheme. Putotyra is not flat out purple. The purple have some reddish hue in it.

Following the previous OOO release, Putotyra has some hidden details.

Here’s triceratops.

And here’s tyranno.

The diecast content is the same as Tatoba and Tajadoru which is disappointing.

Articulation for this guy is a bit limited compare to Tatoba or Tajadoru because of that big shoulder armor. The horn on the shoulder is on a peg and they fall off quite easy when bumped into other parts (the cape attachment point to be precise).

Different from the two previous OOO I’ve reviewed, the shoulder armor of Putotyra is not connected the chest.

The side skirt is made of soft rubber and maybe a bit too soft. I worry about the durability of these part given constant fiddling and aging over time. It doesn’t limit the lower half articulation at all though. Another problem with this part is attaching the OOO scanner and medal holder after removing them can be quite irritating. It’s the same case like Tajadoru’s taja spinner cover where the hole they supposed to go in to bends around.

The head can look down easily but looking up is not possible. That’s how high the head would go. More like he’s looking in front rather than up.

The cape attachment can swivel at the base and there’s also a hinge for up and down movement like in the pictures.

New to Putotyra is the ball joint design on the wrist. The ‘neck’ of the ball joint is thicker compare to the one on Tatoba and Tajadoru which I’m guessing to avoid breaking. A nice touch but still not a fan of the ball joint system.

Moving on to the accessories…

First up are the cell medals. Remember the QC issues I mentioned earlier? Here’s another one. Just look at my review on Tatoba and Tajadoru, their medals do have some scuffing but not this bad. Makes me want to cry looking at this picture. At least the detail is there, eh?

Next are the core medals. The detail is there but the paint apps are not as neat as I would like but still acceptable (by my standard at least XD). These medals can be accessed by removing the cover of the OOO drivers.

Putotyra also comes with clear chest pieces to do the form swap gimmick. Again, I’m a lazy person (forgive me ^_^;)

For arsenal, Putotyra came with his signature weapon, the Medagabryu. The coin slotting gimmick is not there which is understandable but the t-rex’s jaw can be moved down to emulate chomping.

The detail is unsurprisingly jaw dropping.

The hand doesn’t hold the weapon snuggly enough but it will stay in the hand.

I would like to highlight the included stand in this release. The stand has a new attachment which can hold the figure a lot better compared to the usual stand.

Just like in the show, Medagabryu can turn into a bazooka (more like grenade launcher to me) but the one in the show looks like a toy in this mode.

Some folks at Bandai must have felt the same way and we get a barrel extension for this mode.

One problem I have with this mode is the barrel doesn’t align properly with the weapon.

So at some angle, the bazooka’s barrel looks a little crooked.

Still looks badass to me.

The climax of all the accessories are the beast parts (yay :D).

First off, the ptera wing (External Fin if you want to get technical). It’s a pair of wings… so it doesn’t do anything here although it does have one neat feature which I’ll show later. The whole wing is made out of clear plastic with a painted back side and as you can see the surface detail is there but it’s not that clear.

To attach the wing to the figure, Bandai has given us an alternate back piece which can be plugged in after removing the default one. Note that the alternate back piece has the same hinge and swivel like the default one.

Next are the tricera horns. The longer version. Just like the ptera wing, it’s a horn and doesn’t do anything here. The detail is nice though. They just peg in on the shoulder after removing the shorter horn.

Finally, the tyrano tail. The tail has some articulation in it enabled by ball joint. The belt buckle on this piece is not diecast. To attach this to the figure, you need to separate the upper and lower half of the body and this is the main “issue” people have with this release.

Most people who own this guy will say he hasa loose waist joint and I’m quite sure it’s after you split the figure in two for the first time. Fear not, that’s what reviews are for :). The reason for the loose hip joint is people didn’t attach the joint properly.

What I meant is this.

Look at the above picture. The lower and upper joint is connected but when you try to move it, it dislodged. Note that the ball joint is still visible.

All you need to do to fix this is push the joint with more force. This is the correct way how to attach the upper and lower joint after separating them. Note that the ball joint is not visible anymore. Most people did not push the joint hard enough hence the myth of this guy has loose waist. Don’t worry too much about the joint breaking as I can assure it’s quite durable but some care won’t hurt right?

Moving on then.

The berserker is here!!

Note that you need to remove the front part of the belt, the OOO scanner and medal holder from the default belt to complete the one with the tyrano tail. The whole setup doesn’t take my breath away like Tajadoru but maybe it’s just me.

“Blasting freezer!”

The wing is nicely articulated for what it is but the size of Putotyra’s head crest makes it hard to move them around. Having a longer horn on the shoulder is a nice touch but I would prefer the horn in its extended form when OOO impales his opponent before freezing them. Is that asking too much?

“Tail divider!”

Articulation is not being limited somewhat by the whole setup but it does feel a little annoying (sometimes frustrating) to find the point of balance when you get this guy into a pose and those horns really like to pop off when banged against other parts.

Remember that one feature about the wings I was going to tell about? The wing have some…. I’m not sure what’s the technical term for this kind of feature but when you pass the light from behind the wing, it will reveal some vein-ish detail on the wing which is very, very cool.

But trying to photograph this feature is extremely hard. Maybe I just suck at it. This is the best I can show to you guys the entire vein like details.

The new stand attachment really helps the figure in flight poses. Just by having an extra ratcheting arm really improves the stand functionality.

Through some joint manipulation, you can get him hold the bazooka with just one hand.

Should you buy this?

As usual, if you are the show accurate person, I’m guessing these is not up in your alley but to the usual SIC fan or maybe someone who love the redesign, is this a good buy? First off, the price. I bought mine for MYR240 (about USD75) which is a little pricey for people who are not used to the SIC line but rejoice (not for me though), as of writing, the price of this guy is dropping. I’ve seen someone selling him for USD30 in my country. Overall, I felt this release is still up to usual standard of SIC (I consider the QC issue to be just my luck) and I would still recommend this to people who’s thinking of buying him.
