In addition to new weapons and accessories throughout the TV show, GaoGaiGar also received several small design changes and upgrades as well. The most notable one is the StealthGao II, featured heavily throughout the second half of the GaoGaiGar TV series. The StealthGao II is designed for extended use in Space, and when GaoGaiGar is equipped with the StealthGao II, he is known as Star GaoGaiGar! Honestly when I watched the show, I barely remembered his name changed though.
The second Key to Victory set box is absolutely huge compared to a traditional Super Robot Chogokin box, being about twice as wide. It barely fits into my light box.
The StealthGao II is the main component of this set and is a large upgrade to the original StealthGao. The StealthGao II’s finish and paint details are all the same as the StealthGao, and features the same points of articulation at the wings as well. A stand is also included to display the StealthGao II by itself.
Equipping the StealthGao II to GaoGaiGar is very easy. Just removed the StealthGao and plug in the StealthGao II. Simple as that.
With the StealthGao II equipped, GaoGaiGar’s silhouette becomes much more prominent. As if a giant robot made of a lion, trains, drill tanks, and a stealth bomber wasn’t silly enough, the Key to Victory Set 2 adds giant wings and rocket boosters to make this robot even more ridiculous.
In an interesting bit of detail, the bottom portions of the StealthGao II are removable and can be used to reveal additional sculpted detail along with a tiny clear green G-Stone in each booster! There’s no engraved G on the stones, but I think that’s alright since there’s so much detail here to begin with.
The black pieces used to cover the engine details can be replaced with a set of clear green ones. Although it does look a bit silly, there’s something oddly appealing about having GaoGaiGar in flying poses with these pieces on them.
The StealthGao II also upgrades GaoGaiGar’s two main attackes: Broken Magnum and Protect Shade. With the help of the two giant gold rings on the StealthGao II, GaoGaiGar’s attacked are upgraded into the Broken Phantom and Protect Wall. To mimic this, each ring is removable and a clear piece of green plastic keyed to each arm fits snuggly around the forearm.
In addition to the StealthGao II, the Key to Victory Set 2 also comes with the Gatling Driver. A weapon used by GaoGaiGar to immobilize targets, create giant gravity lenses, along with other crazy physics-defying goodness. The Gatling Driver spins freely on its end-effector and all three “blades” on the end are articulated as well.
The stand that comes with the set can also be used as a stand for GaoGaiGar if you do not have a Tamashii Stage stand.
The Key to Victory Set 2 is a great set. The StealthGao II is a satisfyingly huge piece of plastic and the Gatling Driver is a nice addition as well. However, this set is not as essential as the Key to Victory Set 1, which is an absolute necessity. Combined with the fact that these accessories are not as prominent as the Goldion Hammer, and that this set costs about $20 more than the first set, I would only recommend this set to hardcore GaoGaiGar fans. It’s still a great addition to the Super Robot Chogokin, but maybe not one that everyone needs.
