Mechagodzilla
The Super7 Super Shogun Mechagodzilla is an amazing toy. It’s a piece that should have existed 45 years ago that has traveled through time to 2023. It was designed to be a companion piece to the Shogun Warriors Godzilla, released by Mattel in 1978.
Mechagodzilla comes with a protective outer box with minimal graphics. Inside is the actual, beautiful box with full color graphics.
The inner box features a glorious full color image of Mechagodzilla, with Japanese-inspired graphic design. The Japanese text reads As seen in ゴジラ対メカゴジラ (Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla).
Inside that box, Mechagodzilla rests in a 2-part clear plastic tray, with missiles, tail and a sticker sheet.
The stickers give some detail to Mechagodzilla and also there are options for the belt sticker. Two versions are in English, but one is in Japanese. The Japanese sticker has a rainbow color motif which is a callback to the box art of the vintage Bullmark Missle Firing Vinyl Mechagodzilla.
I left the stickers unapplied for this review.
The Super Shogun Mechagodzilla is glorious. The head is soft vinyl and the body is the traditional Jumbo style Polyethelyne, just a little thicker. He stands 20 inches tall – shorter than a traditional Jumbo Machinder, but perfectly scaled with the vintage Shogun Warriors Godzilla. The tail needs to be attached, but it easily pops in and out if you want to put this guy back in the box. (which you won’t.)
Mechagodzilla looks fantastic. The sculpt is a bit soft, and seam lines are visible, but I think this is all intentional to make this seem like it was made back in the day. There are some painted details like the darker grey portions of the arms, and the MG logo on the shoulder, but other details are added by stickers.
Three missiles fit into each hand, with no missiles to spare. Each missile can be fired independently, and each wrist can rotate just like Mechagodzilla did in the movie. The rest of the articulation is standard for a Jumbo – head, shoulders, and hips.
The feet have some sort of weight to them, adding to the Jumbo feel. Underneath are textured wheels so it can roll across the floor.
The real joy for me was seeing it next to the classic Shogun Warriors Godzilla. This toy feels purposefully designed to be a companion to Godzilla, right down to mimicking the positioning of the arms and legs. They just look so good together.
It’s just an amazing toy. If you have the original, it’s a must buy, but even if you don’t it has presence that is undeniable. This toy was made to order and retailed for $400 in 2023, but if there’s one thing I know about Super7, they don’t let a good mold go to waste. I predict we’ll see a black version of this, and posibly a Mechagodzilla2 from the sequel.
