New GodPhoenix
From what I understand, Gatchaman II had a resurgence South Korea in 1990, dubbed Eagle 5 Brothers (독수리 5 형제, Dokksuri Hyeongje). I’m fuzzy on the Korean history of the show, but Sonokong did some merchandise for it, and of course it’s a bit cheap and weird.
These started showing up on ebay around 2019, but they have been out since at least 2016, possibly 2014. There is no mention of them on Sonokong’s current website, but there is a URL on the back of the box.
New GodPhoenix
This is the New GodPhoenix – the main ship from Gatchaman 2. This set features the ship, all 5 support vehicles, and a sticker sheet. The vehicles need to be assembled out of 2 or 3 pieces each and are very small. The ship is 11 inches long with a 9 inch wingspan, and it’s made entirely out of rigid plastic. Basically – it’s a cheap toy. But for $20, you get a lot.
Essentially, it’s a kids toy, with bright, primary colors and little compartments for all the vehicles. The landing gear rolls but is not removable. The wings bend at the mid-point. all of the details are stickers, about 80% of which are already applied.
Note the spelling – GODPHENIX
Each vehicle gets stored in it’s own compartment. The Eagle Sharp rests in the nose. There’s nothing to secure any of the vehicles in their space so they rattle around. Each vehicle has no paint – so they are ripe for customizing.
The Auto Swan fits under the left wing. The wings need to be added to the cycle and they are VERY small.
The Swallow Helico fits in the back, although the space is much too deep.
Ryu’s ship – the Horned Tank, fits under the right wing.
Finally the Condor attacker sits in the compartment on top.
It’s great to have all the little vehicles, even if I did have to put them together.
It’s a fun toy that’s clearly made for kids, and super affordable.
