RGM-79 GM ver. A.N.I.M.E
Continuing the blitz of “OG” Gundam goodness we’ve been getting lately, Robot Spirits presents another classic mobile suit, the GM.
I meant to review this before the Guntank since it came out first, but maybe it was meant to be since the GM is a byproduct of the Guntank and the rest of Project V.
The box does the usual, a great job of selling everything you get. Especially noticeable are the shots of multiple GMs (appropriate since it’s mass-produced) and that famous scene where Char’s Z’Gok punches one out through the cockpit. Being famous and looking good aren’t always a pair, but this RS seems to make up for it with range-of-motion.
An RS GM was bound to happen, so I’m glad it was put off as long as it was. Because Bandai is killing it with these A.N.I.M.E. figures. Additional contents are the manual & decals, which I forgot about.
Once again, we’ve got a figure that’s an excellent approximation of the anime. There’s just a bit of modern touch with the panel lines and translucent visor. The proportions and colors are just right.
The A.N.I.M.E. Guncannon I recently reviewed boasted enhanced articulation faithful to its design, and this GM continues that trend to greater effect. It can do it all, so running isn’t a problem.
Or anything else for that matter. We’ve seen similar before with the Chogokin GM, but the RS is that much better with more disguised joints, legit wrists, toe bends, a more natural chest, and a segmented front hip skirt.
Like the Guncannon too, the GM can turn its head up near 90-degrees, which is perfect for flying.
Or getting picked on by other toys.
For weapons, the GM has its usual spread. The 60-mm Vulcan cannons are plainly visible in the forehead, and the beam saber is easily accessible from the recharge rack on the back.
As usual, the shield has three different attachments. It can be hand-held, arm-mounted, or back-mounted.
It was just now I realized the recharge rack could be tilted. Neat.
Like the AE Gundam, there’s another shield attachment for storing the beam spray gun.
There’s also a hidden port to attach a bracket for a hyper bazooka.
Which is included.
Fully loaded & ready for launch. This would be the perfect time for that catapult deck set.
On the more benign side, there’s the now seemingly standard hand tree.
There’s a blast effect for the gun.
And then there’s six booster effects. The two large ones can go anywhere, but they’re intended for the backpack, which is why they’re curved just past the pegs.
I goofed on getting an MSG pic, but here’s a comparison with my other GMs. Though different in influence, the MSIA & GFF fall short. Only the Chogokin comes close, and it’s even more anime accurate. But the RS is even more poseable and has just the right dose of modern flavor.
Like the A.N.I.M.E. Guncannon & Guntank before it, the A.N.I.M.E. GM is another hit in my book. Unlike the Guntank but like the Guncannon, it’s also affordable at the $50+/- range most wide-release Robot Spirits figures tend to go for. If you’ve been wanting a great GM figure or a better one than what you’ve got, this is what you’ve been waiting for. The only question is if Bandai will bother repainting it for future releases, and if so, if they’ll be wide-release or Tamashii web exclusives.
