Spazer + TFO

When I reviewed the EX Gokin Grendizer, I expressed my interest in the upcoming Spazer, and after months of waiting I finally have it. Does it live up to the EX Gokin name? Let’s find out.

The box is the same size as the Grendizer, but it’s not the same style of box. This is the standard cardboard box with the opening end, and inside is a clear plastic tray instead of the usual styro.

Included with the set is:

– Spazer (ship, fin, 2 wings)
– Stand (3 pcs)
– two hands
– TFO
– Drill missiles
– Clear stand for TFO

The TFO is about 2 inches around and the golden disc is made out of diecast metal. The disc can rotate around the center section which is a really nice touch.

The center plug can be removed and the clear stand can be attached.

Out of the box you need to attach the wings and center fin on the Spazer. The completed Spazer is about 16 inches wide and 10 inches long. It has a modernized style but still evokes the classic vehicle.

The metal content on the Spazer is limited to the engines on the back, and the fold out gear at the bottom.

The pods on either side of the wing have opening tops but are not removable. Once opened, the Drill Missiles can be mounted on the top.

To get Grendizer to fit into the Spazer, you have to remove the legs. This can be accomplished by pressing the blue fin on the back of the lower legs which releases them.

Once done, open the lid by releasing the side clips and slide the center section back. Then, split the lower section in front in half.

Grendizer plugs into the holes in the back of the opened Spazer, and then the whole assembly closes around him. While the classic Spazer docks with the arms on the outside, this one docks on the inside.

The set really shines when you add the stand. EX Gokin stands are usually useless, but this one is great. There’s a small bit of assembly required, including some screws, but once assembled it can be adjusted using the set screw.

To mount the Spazer, line up the black peg with the hole on the bottom, then turn it 90 degrees.

Once lined up push in the section on the back so the tabs click in.

The Spazer now can be soaring wherever you choose to display it.

Then there is the matter of the hands. For the first time with EX Gokin, we have fully articulated fingers. The bad news is that they are total crap. The fingers just pop off when you even look at them. I didn’t even bother to put them on the figure.

I’m not sure if Taku Sato designed the Spazer as well as the figure, but whoever did, they did a good job of mimicking his style. It’s a great set, and about half the cost of the figure itself. Definitely worth getting if you have the robot.
