VF-1J Valkyrie Omen Mask

In an age of exclusively priced Valkyrie toys and Macross collectibles, it is sometimes easy to forget that at one time Macross was one of the latest cartoons marketed to young school aged kids across Japan. Many of the earlier products released in the first few years of Macross reflects these young viewers such as menko playing cards, rubber band shooting games and Valkyrie themed kites.

As my Macross collection advanced over the years, I find myself enjoying finding these types of Macross themed products for my collection as a reminder of the series origins and its first young viewers. One of the more eye-catching items from this period is this VF-1J Valkyrie Omen Mask.

Made from vacumform plastic material that is commonly found in Halloween masks, it is amazing this item has survived this long without any damage considering the fragility of the item.

The chrome color change up of the orange, silver and red make this an incredible eye-catching item for display, and I especially love the molded in clear green lens. I also love the unsubtle Macross Logo sticker prominently displayed on the front of the mask.

This VF-1J Mask is an impressive and aesthetically beautiful looking mask that should be seen in person to fully enjoy the craftsmanship and charm of this item. I can’t help to think it must have been fun back in the day running around pretending to be Hikaru’s Valkyrie.

It has been over 30 years since Macross was first released on televisions in Japan and although the viewers and the series itself has grown up and matured, it is nice to find these items as a reminder of its humble origins and its first young viewers.
