Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan is the fifth entry in the Super Sentai Franchise. After the Machine Empire Black Magma surfaces and threatens do its world domination thing, the United Nations steps in and assembles the Taiyo Sentai. This three man team of heroes is all that stands between the world and Black Magma’s evil schemes. The leader of the Taiyo Sentai, Vul Eagle, is originally an air force officer by the name of Ryusuke Ohwashi. Later in the series, Ryusuke leaves to pursue a career at NASA. A colleague of Ryusuke’s, Takayuki Hiba, replaces his as Vul Eagle.
The S.H. Figuarts Vul Eagle is a great looking toy incarnation of this character.Bandai did its best to portray the character in plastic form. There are even wrinkles molded into the body suit, but the plastic doesn’t completely capture the look of the suit’s wrinkles and loose areas.
Differences in the look of the body suit’s material, Vul Eagle’s outfit is very faithfully recreated, down to the eagles on the belt and helmet.
Articulation is the usual S.H. Figuarts articulation, with ball joints and double joints all over the place.
Sun Vulcan featured the sentai heroes performing a lot of acrobatic stunts. From his roll call to his signature attacks, the S.H. Figuarts body of Vul Eagle is able to keep up with its on screen counterpart …for the most part.
Let’s Shine!
Taiyo Senta!
Sun Vulcan!
Vul Eagle!
Eagle Wing!
He can pull of the first part of the attack much better than the actual attack and the follow through. S.H. Figuarts have never been able to cross arms like a real human, at least not without using a separage set of arms, so the Eagle Wing attack falls a bit short in its S.H. Figuarts form.
Now that the monster has been defeated and its gonna do its growth thing, Vul Eagle has still got you covered.
Jaguar Vulcan Launch!
So much action! Let’s kick it down a notch.
The scarf is on a ball joint, so you can move it around and make Vul Eagle’s poses look that much more dynamic.
Vul Eagle comes with his Vulcan Stick. You can swap out the body of the stick for storage or use it as a short sword.
Vul Eagle also comes with a second sword, for all your sword-fighting needs.
Vul Eagle comes with most of his arsenal from the show. I would have liked to see him come with the Vulcan Ball. Hopefully that will be include with the Vul Shark and Vul Panther set.
Vul Eagle comes with more hands than you can shake a Vulcan Stick at.
As I mentioned before, the cast of Sun Vulcan was a an acrobatic bunch, so it is nice to have a wide assortment of hands to fit whatever maneuver you want to pull off with the toy.
Plus, he has a thumbs up hand.
For those wondering about the size of this toy, it does follow in the footsteps of Akaranger.
Vul Eagle is slightly taller than previous S.H. Figuarts releases and makes it a bit out of scale with the previous Rangers of the line. I would be lying if I said this didn’t bug me a bit. Since I want to get all of the S.H. Figuarts Red Rangers, I would have been better if they were all perfectly in scale with each other. I still don’t get why Bandai has decided to make the new releases a bit taller.
Anyhow, besides the slight departure in the scale standard, this is another great release that comes with just about everything it needs to.
